| For electoral politics, NC, PDP support anti-nationals in courts | |    |

srinagar, Jan 17: Ahead of polls, the National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party have resorted to appeasement of pro-separatist elements as their leaders have been filing habeas corpus petitions to seek release of youth detained under Public Safety Act.
A source in PDP said that son of a senior leader, who is a lawyer by profession, has been pleading the cases of stone pelters. "Mehbooba Mufti recently told the gatherings in south Kashmir that her party's legal cell will help in releasing of stone pelters," the source said.
"The PDP has hired a group of lawyers who plead the cases of stone pelters and who are part of separatists," an advocate of the High Court said. "This is just to appease the separatists ahead of polls," the source said. Mehbooba has also been visiting the militant families for the last few weeks. "She wants to appease the separatists and militants so that they help her in polls," the source said.
According to sources, the lawyers representing the NC have filed petitions against the PSA. In these petitions, they have sought the quashing of the PSA on the youth who were allegedly involved in disturbing law and order and indulged in stone pelting. The NC has former advocate general head of party's legal cell.
"These lawyers are being paid by the National Conference to plead the cases of stone pelters and some are also part of separatist groups," a senior NC leader confirmed. "We don't charge these people who were arrested by police allegedly involved in stone pelting," he said.
The providing of legal assistance is a complete U-turn from 2010 when NC which was in power then used call those who were arrested drug addicts and used to justify Omar Abdullah government to put those behind bars who were creating law and order problem. Similarly, Mehbooba during the peak of 2016 summer unrest, while addressing a press conference in Srinagar along with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh justified the killing of youth saying that "had they gone to camps and police station to buy toffees and milk".
These days the party leaders have been openly supporting separatists and advocating militancy. Sources said these have been giving Kashmir centric statements keeping in view of the upcoming elections. "They want to please separatists which may help him in elections," an NC leader said. | | |
