Fake shawls flood markets as Handloom department incurs wasteful expenditure | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 8: The J&K Handloom Development Department has been claiming giant strides in development of shawls, tweeds, linen and other handloom items and has been highlighting the same in an exhibition amid much fanfare. The plight of Kashmiri shawls as claimed by the department is actually nothing to be prided on. Shawls made outside the State especially in Amritsar are openly being sold in the State and outside in the name of famous Kashmiri shawls and unscrupulous traders are making huge profits through the sale of these shawls. The local weavers who earn their livelihood from shawl making are living in deplorable conditions. Instead of organization fairs and exhibition the J&K Handloom department could have served the shawl industry much better by devoting attention to the plight of the local shawl makers whose lives have not undergone any betterment since decades. The exploitation of the shawl makers continues under the very noose of the department and holding of exhibitions and fairs is only serving to divert the attention from the real problems of the shawl weavers. |
