SaMaPa Aalap 2014: Zunain Khan's scintillating sitar recital leaves audience spell bound

Jammu, Feb 14 : Scintillating sitar recital by Zunain Halim Khans from Mumbai left audience spell bound here today during the ongoing 9th Annual SaMaPa Aalap Festival (SAF) 2014 which was held at Ved Mandir, Amphalla.
SAF 2014 is presented by SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Jammu & Kashmir Police and Department of Tourism, Jammu. The today's concert was also dedicated to Ustad Ghulam Mohd Saznawaaz, a legendary Sufiana musician of Kashmir who died yesterday.
In his condolence message Santoor maestro Abhay Sopori said that it's a huge loss to the Sufiana mausiqi (music) and also the State of J&K. During the proceeding of the programme, Zunain Halim Khan, who has emerged as one of the foremost Sitar players of his generation, is the leading exponent in sitar style innovated by his father and guru Padmabhushan Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan. His recital demonstrated his unique subtlety of the rendition of the raga and kept audience of children from Bal Niketan, Maharaja Pratap Singh Vidyalaya along with their teachers and staff and Inmates of Old and Infirm Home enthralled. He was accompanied on Tabla by Shubash Kanto Das.
Initially programme began with the traditional lamp lighting ceremony by maestro Abhay Rustum Sopori, Senior musicologist and music critic Pt Vijay Shankar Mishra, Sufi Singer Ragini Rainu, performing musicians along with Amar Chand Gupta, President Ved Mandir, Capt Purshotam Sharama, Vice President, K K Mengi, Secretary Ved Mandir and O P Verma, member Ved Mandir. Amar Chand Gupta, President Ved Mandir presented welcome address while Mengi presented vote of thanks. The programme also featured an enthralling vocal recital by Nitin Sharma, a young vocalist from Delhi. Nitin made the students sing with him various compositions and patterns and also gave a brief description on various aspects of Indian music. He was accompanied by Shubhash Kanti Das on Tabla and Damodar Lal Ghose on Harmonium.
SAF 2014 on 15th February will feature vocal recital by Jagmeet Kaur at DBN School, Camp Road at 11:00 am
