SRINAGAR, Feb 14: The much awaited official inauguration of historical Mughal road which is considered as a second life line to Kashmir is likely to get delayed by five more years as the under construction project which needs an important tunnel to make it an all weather road proof has been put on the back foot in state budget with no deadline.
An enormous amount of Rs 639.85 crore spent on Mughal road project which was likely to be thrown open to public in the year 2008 missed several deadlines and is likely to get delayed by at least five years.
An all important tunnel project from Zaznar to Chatapani can take more than five years in case the work on tunnel project is started from next working season and if it is further delayed then automatically it will take more than five years. As the Minister of Finance for Jammu and Kashmir while presenting the state budget in legislative assembly yesterday said the project shall be discussed with the central government. Nothing more was said. However according to an engineer who worked with Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) during the construction of road over the years said that completion of construction work on Mughal road in real sense can take more than five years if the tunnel project which is must keeping in view the heavy snowfall area along the way from Zaznar to Chatapani is not undertaken immediately.
He said road is still incomplete and of no use as according to him besides all important tunnel projects seven major bridges along the road among which three bridges fall on the road from Shopian side and four from Poonch side of the road are still under construction. Besides 10 kilometers of road starting from Peer Ki Gali of Shopian side towards Bafliaz another point on the road from Poonch side are also still under construction.
Pertinently, the Mughal Road project was started in 2005 with the government setting year 2008 as deadline for completion of the work. However, official inauguration of Mughal road was cancelled for the fifth time in the month of June last year when Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh visited Kashmir and after inaugurating rail project from Qazigund to Banihal ,Prime Minister's visit was scheduled to inaugurate Mughal road project too but according to the sources due to incomplete work, inauguration program was postponed.
