Ladakh has 100% sown area irrigated, Reasi lowest at 6.56% | | | Sandeep Bhat
Jammu, Aug 10 : Irrigation is the artificial application of water to the land or soil and an essential input of agriculture and is practised in all parts of the world where rainfall doesn't provide enough ground moisture and in areas of irregular rainfall, irrigation is used during dry spells to ensure harvests and to increase crop yields. Water being a state subject, the state government has primary responsibility for use and control of this source. In Jammu and Kashmir, the administrative control is under irrigation department and area irrigated comprises thousands of hectares through canals, tanks, wells, and other resources. As per ES JK , the inter district position shows that the net as well as gross sown area in Leh and Kargil in Ladakh are cent percent irrigated. Among the districts with large gross area irrigated, Ganderbal has 77.15 percent, Anantnag 73.20 percent and Shopian 72.98 percent. Districts with very low percentage of gross area irrigated are Reasi at 6.56 %, Ramban 7.34%.other districts of the state include Srinagar with gross area sown 10230 hectares, only 7365 hectares of gross area irrigated at 71.99 %, Kulgam at 69.69%, Pulwama at 66.61%, Jammu at 59.05%, Bandipora at 54.86%, Kupwara at 53.85%, Baramulla at 45.73%, Poonch at 14.31%, Rajouri at 8.71%, Udhampur at 12.33 and Doda at 9.61 % of gross area irrigated in 2012-13.This shows there is uneven rainfall throughout the state and that is the major reason for huge difference in percentage of gross area irrigated.
