Senior NC leader praises PDP, says, party has emerged as strong alternative | | | Fazal Khan
Srinagar, Aug 10: A few days after senior National Conference leader from north Kashmir Abdul Rasheed Shaheen blamed the top party leadership for party's debacle in the state and predicted that NC is a "sinking ship", former Member Parliament, and senior NC leader Dr Mehboob Beg, on today said, "Forthcoming assembly elections are not going to be a cakewalk for the NC and People’s Democratic party has emerged as a strong alternative for the masses." Dr Beg who lost the recently held parliamentary elections to PDP President Mehbooba Mufti without mincing any words said, "Results of Parliamentary elections have served as an eye opener from top NC leader to a grass root worker. We had never thought that we will lose all the three parliamentary seats in Kashmir. Results were a shocker for us." Dr Beg said that he and other NC leaders were of the opinion that winning the south Kashmir Parliamentary seat won't be that difficult as the party had entered into a pre-poll alliance with the Congress party. "The Congress party has a huge presence in south Kashmir and we had thought defeating the PDP candidate would not be that difficult. Our calculations failed as we realized afterwards that the Congress workers found it convenient to vote for PDP rather than NC," Dr Beg told Early Times. In a surprising development Dr Beg praised the PDP for playing a role of "vibrant opposition" in the state. "We have to realize our follies and mistakes rather than blaming others for our defeat. PDP cornered the government on every issue and left the government red faced on many occasions," he said. "PDP has emerged as a strong alternative for people." Asked about the chances of NC in the forthcoming assembly elections, Dr Beg said, "Coming elections are not going to be that easy for us. The most unfortunate part which we witnessed during the past five and a half years was that ministers of both the parties NC and the Congress remained confined to their constituencies. They had to play a larger role as ministers but they just acted like local MLAs due to which many areas were neglected." "In the recent parliamentary elections people gave a clear verdict and I believe masses have already made up their mind. We have kept our fingers crossed and are hoping for the best," he added. Dr Beg, however, refused to comment on the banner of revolt raised the senior party leader Abdul Rasheed Shaheen. "I can say only one thing if you criticize the party leadership that means you are out of the party," he added. It is in place to mention here soon after NC lost the parliamentary elections in Kashmir, Dr Beg had hit out at the senior NC leader and the Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather. He had blamed Rather for party's debacle and had alleged that NC had to pay the price for Rather's anti-people policies. A senior NC leader who wished anonymity while talking to Early Times said that "all is not well" within the party ranks. "Everyone seems to have one or other grudge against each other. We are not heading anywhere," he added. The leader revealed that many NC workers have joined other parties and have changed their loyalties. "It is unfortunate but it's true," he added. "Even the top leaders have realized that nothing is going to happen as it's too late," the leader lamented. |
