Mufti tipped to become CM, Jitendra his deputy | Both parties to give up position on 'some tricky' issues | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 28: Revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the 'peaceful' areas of the state as proposed by People’s Democratic Party (PDP) continues to be main stumbling block with regard to the formation of PDP and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state. Sources told Early Times that both the parties have decided to give up their position on some 'tricky' issues while as consensus has eluded them over the revocation or otherwise of AFSPA from the areas that have witnessed few militant incidents in the recent past. Both PDP and BJP are sticking to their stated position on this issue and so far no agreement has been reached. "It has almost been agreed in principle that PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed would be the next chief minister of the state. Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office, Jitendra Singh is all likely to be his deputy. Both the parties have reached consensus on important issues, but the same has eluded them with respect to revocation of AFSPA as demanded by PDP," sources said. Sources said that while BJP has decided not to talk of abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu & Kashmir, on its part the PDP has conceded demand of BJP that it will not talk about Self-Rule during the tenure of the new government. Both the parties have decided to follow the development model with 'tricky' issues remaining untouched. Since Governor Narendra Nath Vohra has asked both the PDP and BJP to present their blue print with regard to government formation in the state by January 1, leaders of both these parties are talking to each other and also within the party. It is due to this reason only that speed of consultation and deliberation has picked up over the past couple of days. "Formation of the cabinet has also been almost finalized with eight ministers belonging to BJP and six ministers belonging to the PDP. Despite some reservations the BJP has given up on its demand for a Chief Minister from the Jammu region. It has been decided that Mufti would be CM for six years with BJP getting important portfolios," said sources. Sources said that the BJP leaders, workers and activists in the union capital are quite jubilant over this development and they see it as a great achievement for the party. If the PDP-BJP alliance forms the next government in the state it would be for the first time in history of Jammu & Kashmir that BJP is a part of the government. Meanwhile, it has been learnt that All India Congress Committee (AICC) President, Sonia Gandhi talked to PDP Patron on phone today and asked him to form the next government with the support of Congress and National Conference. Sonia urged Mufti to refrain from taking support of BJP saying that BJP is a 'communal' party. "The Congress President vouched for a grand alliance of People’s Democratic Party, Congress and National Conference as put forward by senior party leader and former chief minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. She asked the PDP Patron to take support of parties like Congress and NC and not of a party like BJP," said sources. The formation of new government in the state is giving sleepless nights to the politicians and common masses since no party has got simple or two thirds majority in the 87 member house. PDP has emerged as single largest party with 28 members with BJP finishing second at 25. NC has 15 members in the new house and Congress 12 members. |
