Jammu, Jan 22: The claims may be tall but the ground reality that most of toilets of the prime hospital of Jammu province- Government Medical College and Hospital are dirty. The unhygienic conditions make them a perfect breeding ground for germs. However, authorities concerned are busy passing the buck, are least bothered. Pertinently, the GMC hospital Jammu caters to thousands of patients from across the province every day, but when it comes to sanitation, there is lot to be desired. The bathrooms in the hospital are overflowing with dirty water. The pipes are leaking, the faucets don't work and toilets smell as is these have not been cleaned for last some months. The toilets of the hospital are in pathetic condition for the last some months. When a correspondent visited the hospital and found most of the toilets and washrooms dirty with the washbasins brimming with wastewater, and filth scattered all over the floors. Poor upkeep of toilets and washrooms was posing a serious threat to their health. Seeking anonymity, a nurse told Early Times that they were not allowed to use some hygienic toilets made for the staff as they were kept under lock and key. The toilets are always locked and we don't get access to the key. Even the doctors use the staff toilets. "The public toilets-lack running water, have no latches on doors, stink and the floors are always wet and slippery- so poorly maintained that they are impossible to use and poor conditions are causing problem to people, especially women in the hospital," she claimed. "It seems that the sanitation staff is not doing any work here," a visitor told, women patients and attendants have been the worst sufferers and toilets in the hospitals are supposed to be cleaner and hygienic but it's other way around in the hospital. Everyone is under the risk of infection, if the hospital administration is not improving the cleaning procedures. When contacted Medical Superintendent GMCH, Dr. Ravinder Rattan Paul admitted the hospital are facing the problems owing to shortage of sanitation staff in the hospital. "The hospital administration is working on it and good toilet facility would be provided to the patients, visitors as well as staff of hospital as soon. |
