Sajad Lone wants RS seat for PC from BJP | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 22: After the notification for the four Rajya Sabha seats was issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on January 21 for Jammu and Kashmir, BJP is mulling to nominate a candidate from Kashmir valley with the talks over the issue gaining momentum with the Peoples' Conference (PC) chairman Sajad Gani Lone. Lone, the former separatist, according to sources wants BJP to nominate his party man for the Rajya Sabha post, saying party's representation is needed from valley and that it would strengthen party's ground in troubled land of Kashmir. Sources said that if BJP-PDP alliance takes shape ahead of February 7, the saffron party would strive to nominate one person from valley for the RS seat. Sources privy to this development told this newspaper that there have been various telephonic conversations between Lone and senior BJP leaders over the issue wherein Lone has in open advocated the nomination of his party man for the Rajya Sabha post. Though the party leaders in J&K refused to divulge any information about such a development, sources within the state BJP said that such issues are being discussed widely within the party. Meanwhile, BJP insiders in valley disclosed that the party wants its own leader from Kashmir valley to send to Rajya Sabha so that it could gain much ground in Kashmir during the times ahead. Though the party performed well in Jammu region and became second largest in the state after PDP with 25 seats in its kitty, it could not open its account in Valley during the recently held state elections for the 87 member assembly. One of the party leaders wishing not to be named said that after the triumph in state elections of 2014, the BJP high command has asked its cadre to gain maximum footing in valley besides strengthening its ground further in Jammu region. "There have been deliberations over the issue of not very well performance in Kashmir valley. The party in unison has resolved to work much harder in this Himaliyan region so that in the times ahead, the party could look forward in gaining its foothold." The BJP leader added further that the party wants to have a nominated member for Rajya Sabha from valley if the government formation with the PDP takes shape ahead of the February first week. "There are discussions of giving this honour to Sajad Lone's party but there has been no formal or serious thought over this issue so far." Sajad Lone, the son of the former separatist late Abdul Gani Lone, raised eye bows and dropped many jaws after he termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi his 'elder brother'. Lone after meeting the Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi ahead of the assembly elections stated that he was too much impressed by Modi and his leadership quality. As the alliance between Lone's Party PC and BJP was hidden but speculations used to galore that BJP might accord some important position to this 45 year old separatist turned mainstream politician. On December 8 last year, when Prime Minister addressed Srinagar at SK Stadium, the then chief minister Omar Abdullah accused Lone of 'bundling people in vehicles from north Kashmir to attend Modi's rally.' Though Lone ridiculed such reports but always hailed Modi and his BJP for the pro-development slogan. Despite his repeated sayings that he would support any stable coalition in J&K, the two assembly segments that Lone won from North Kashmir carry weight in terms of strengthening his party's relationship with the BJP, observe the political pundits. |
