Sports Authority of India sanctions STC for Jammu, Extension centre for Srinagar | MoU inked between SAI, J&K Govt | | Abodh Sharma ET Report JAMMU, Feb 5: Jammu shall soon have a Sports Training Centre of Sports Authority of India (STC) with an extension centre at Srinagar. A memorandum of understanding was signed between SAI authorities and the J&K government represented by Secretary Technical Education Khurshid Ahmad Shah and Secretary J&K State Sports Council Dilip Thussu in New Delhi earlier this week. According to the terms of the MoU, a residential centre shall be set up at MA stadium Jammu, wherein the State Sports Council shall provide its infrastructural facilities in Handball, Basketball, Gymnastics, Wushu, Badminton and swimming (recreational), while SAI shall provide facilities of boarding and complete training for the selected inmates. The extension centre of the STC shall operate in Srinagar which has been allocated disciplines like Water sports (Canoeing & Kayaking), Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Football and Volleyball. "The identified disciplines are however yet to be categorized into residential and day-boarding" a senior SAI Coach informed. It is pertinent to mention here that Sports Authority of India had set up an STC at Udhampur, but the same was shut down due to unavailability of proper training facilities near the centre and it was proposed to relocate it in Jammu. "Despite the fact that Sports Council and SAI authorities had principally agreed for reopening of the hostel in Jammu, the MoU could not be inked for certain reasons" informed the Coach. "The process was set into motion after BJP MLA Nirmal Singh took up the matter with Secretary J&K SSC and directed to resume negotiations with SAI authorities for an early reopening of the STC" he added. Dr. Nirmal Singh when contacted said, "It is our endeavour to provide best avenues to our youth and sportsmen in sports and extra- curricular fields and after the matter was brought to my notice, I urged the authorities to get the impediments removed for reopening of the STC as it would be of great help for our sportsmen to excel at the national and international level". Secretary Sports Council Dilip Thussu confirmed that decision to open STC in Jammu has been taken at the highest level and the same shall be made operational at the earliest. "Yes the STC in Jammu has been sanctioned and we shall make it operational within next two weeks" Thussu lamented. Sports Authority of India operates it sports development projects in different states of the country through STCs, which have both residential and non residential Day Boarding schemes wherein selected sports persons are imparted specialized training and provided free boarding and lodging besides competition exposure. |
