Jammu, Feb 5: The apathetic attitude of Surinsar-Mansar Development Authority (SMDA) in restoration of dilapidated heritage buildings and their paintings falling under the authority can very well be gauged from the fact that it miserably failed to utilize Rs 10 lakhs allocated for their preservation and the amount is lying unused in its bank account for the last six years.
Sources told Early Times that state government in 2008-2009 had provided Rs 10 lakhs to the Surinsar-Mansar Development Authority for the restoration and renovation of worn out heritage Havelis and Sarais for their historical importance.
"These heritage Hevelis and Sarais have ancient designs and drawings with beautiful mural paintings of Ramayana and Mahabharata on their walls," they said. These paintings on the walls of Havelis and Sarais are very rare depicting world famous epics of Ramayana and Mahabharta but with the passage of time, these paintings had faded away and were in need of immediate restoration, sources added.
They further added that with the sheer negligence of officials at the helm of the affairs, the amount of Rs 10 lakhs could not be utilized for this purpose and was lying unused in the bank account of the SMDA, while the preservation work could not be started and connoisseurs and other people of the state are about to lose paintings of historical significance.
The height of carelessness on the part of authority was oblivious from the response given by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Surnisar Mansar Development Authority Vikas Gupta who when contacted said that he had joined just few month back and had no knowledge about the issue and will give information after few days.
But when he was contacted after few days again, CEO did not respond to repeated calls on his cellphone.
