Defeated Ghulam Hassan Mir seeks 'rehabilitation' in legislative council | | | Shakeel A Khan
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 16: As the elections for the legislative council are drawing nearer politicians who lost the assembly elections recently are pushing to get in the house of elders of the state legislature. Same can be said of former agriculture minister, Ghulam Hassan Mir whose quest for power seems not to be over despite the humiliating defeat he faced in the assembly elections from Gulmarg constituency. Mir is said to be in touch with the people in Delhi so that he could make it to the legislative council. Source said that former agriculture minister is trying his best to enter the Legislative Council as a means of his 'Ghar Wapsi'. In wildest of dreams he hadn't imagined his defeat at the hands of the little known political personality from the Gulmarg constituency. "Defeat of the former agriculture minister was termed as one of the biggest upsets of the assembly elections held in 2014. The minister himself fell from the skies after verdict of the people came out on December 23," said Sajad Ahmad from Tangmarg. People close to Mir say that the ex-minister is waiting for the opportunity to be in the corridors of power one way or the other. As per these people, Mir has found the elections for the legislative council as a chance to make his presence felt on the ground. "These days the former agriculture minister is seen frequenting New Delhi to win the favours to be considered as one of the candidates for the legislative council. He feels that if he remains out of the contest, the next six years may prove enough for him," said one of the workers of his party on the condition of anonymity. This worker went on saying that the victory of his like-minded people as that of Hakim Mohammad Yaseen and Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has created in him a sense of alienation as he is the only prominent third front leader who couldn't make it to the assembly. Sources within DPN say that Mir thinks that many of his friends, who won the assembly elections, will do everything for his victory in the elections for the legislative council. As per these sources, the election of Ghulam Nabi Azad for the Rajya Sabha has also come as the soul igniting moment for Mir. The sources within the party say that Mir thinks his political career could be at stake if his role remains invisible during the next six years. As a matter of fact, the post-election scenario has given a clear edge to the PDP, particularly for its 'people friendly' agenda for the government formation and the leaders like Mir have begun to feel the heat. |
