Independent legislators hold key to two LC seats from Kashmir | | | Kunal Shrivatsa Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 21: With five candidates being elected unopposed to Legislative Council today, all eyes are now set on the fate of remaining six out of total eleven seats that go to polls on March 2. Role of independent Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) has once again gained significance after the recently concluded Rajya Sabha polls. Three Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and two Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) candidates were elected unopposed as Members Legislative Council (MLC) since nobody stood against them on the last day of the withdrawal of the candidature. The five candidates who were officially declared elected unopposed as MLCs include Anayat Ali, Yasir Reshi and Firdous Ahmed Tak of PDP, Sofi Yousaf and Chering Dorjay of BJP. Now, the elections will take place for two seats of Kashmir Province and four seats of Jammu region on March 2. Going by the arithmetic in the Legislative Assembly, the PDP-BJP combine could surely clinch four out of the six seats scheduled to go for polls as the two partners would capture three seats from Jammu province while it could add another one from Kashmir. However, the second seat is proving dicey for the PDP-BJP alliance candidate as in case the three independent MLAs cast their votes in favour of National Conference (NC) candidate backed by Congress, then the seat could go to NC's kitty. For two seats of Kashmir, three candidates are in the race. These include Javed Ahmad Mirchal and Saif-ud-Din Bhat, both PDP and Qaiser Jamsheed Lone of NC. Five candidates are in contest for four seats of Jammu province including Vibodh Gupta, Ramesh Arora and Charanjit Singh Khalsa of BJP, Surinder Choudhary of PDP and Sajjad Ahmad Kitchloo of NC. While, the NC candidate Sajjad Ahmad Kitchloo is sure to win the seat from Jammu province and the former ruling party can get another from Kashmir if its candidate Qaiser Jamsheed Lone is able to get the support of three independent legislators of the Lower House of the State Legislature. In case, the independent MLAs voted on the pattern of Rajya Sabha polls held on February 7 then the NC could easily spoil the party of PDP for the two Legislative Council seats of Kashmir region. Pertinently, Ghulam Nabi Azad, joint candidate of Congress and NC managed to win one Rajya Sabha seat with the help of independent legislators there by stopping the PDP-BJP combine in making a clean sweep on all the four seats of Rajya Sabha. |
