Bark of women's rights activists do not match their bite | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 17: The Summer Capital City of J&K has an unending list of the women's rights activists whose bark actually do not match their bite. All of them have shied away from raising their voice against the alleged March 9 incident of Health Minister Lal Singh passing "derogatory" remarks on Dr Gurmeet Kour, a Registrar at government psychiatrist hospital here. He put the lady doctor to unnecessary harassment only because she was not wearing an apron. The medical fraternity of Jammu has termed the minister wrong, saying doctors don't wear aprons in psychiatrist hospital as these are psychological barrier between them and mental patients. Criticising him for his alleged misbehaviour, resident doctors here had later abandoned aprons in support of their colleague but the women's rights activists of Jammu are yet to come out of their hibernation to express their views on the minister's alleged arrogance and "overbearing pride evidenced by his superior manner towards the subordinate lady doctor". Choudhary Nazakat Khatana (Jammu Kashmir Gujjar Bakkarwal Desh Youth Body) This man has a finger in every pie. It does not matter how irrelevant he and his statements are but he would do anything to remain in the limelight. Be it the issue of women's rights or the eviction of JDA land grabbers at Sidhra, he is sure to be there in the forefront. He often issues press notes and holds press conferences, boasting of his achievements as an activist of women's rights. That he was not even remotely linked to the fight for the women's rights became evident after the society witnessed with surprise his silence over the lady doctor's alleged harassment at the hands of the health minister. He has miserably failed to produce the results the society expected from him. Vikrant Kapoor (Senior Vice-President of Shiv Sena, J&K) Shiv Sainiks would burn down shops selling Valentine's Day cards, saying that the day was different from Hindu culture and had been corrupting the minds of teenagers, especially the girls. Though they are the self-proclaimed activists of women's rights, they have not felt it necessary to come in support of the lady doctor who was disrespected by the health minister in public. Given their statements in the past, it is their prime duty to fight for the rights and integrity of women.
Mohammad Yousaf Wani (President of J&K State Samaj Sudhar Committee) As the name suggests, his organisation gives him the right for refining society in J&K. He would speak on any trivial issue but would not say a word on the health minister disgracing the lady doctor. What type of 'samaj sudhar' he intends to do when he cannot take the initiative on the sensitive issue of respect, honour and integrity of women. Sanjay Saraf (Lok Jan Shakti Party) He has also not come true to his own assertions on the safety and integrity of women. He was expected to tell Lal Singh that Indian Constitution does not grant a minister the right to "ill-treat" women but, like others, he too preferred to avoid the issue. |
