After September floods, heavy rains wreak havoc in Mongri | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA

JAMMU, Mar 17: As if the devastation caused by September floods was not enough that the recent rainfall wreaked havoc yet again in Tehsil Mongri in Udhampur district destroying property worth crores. Last week's heavy rainfall has damaged scores of houses and road links in a number of villages in far off places in Tehsil Mongri located in vast and mountainous Bhamag area, part of which lies in Udhampur district while another portion falls in Reasi district.In Sarola Mohalla, Ward No 6, in Village Mongri as many as 24 families belonging to Scheduled Caste community have got affected as their house have either damaged completely or partially due to the mudslide caused by incessant rains. While in Leasy Kalwal area in Mongri Tehsil, 17 hutments, belonging to 12 Gujjar and 5 General Category families, have got fully or partially damaged. Narrating his tale of woe a resident of Leasy Kalwal, Shafi Gujjar said that just when they were recovering from last year's devastation, the nature's fury again hit them. "We are up against a worst kind of natural disaster second time in six months ….My house is completely damaged due to the massive mudslides….There are several other structures belonging to my community have developed huge cracks due to the impact of sliding boulders….I had no other option but to vacate my hutment as it is unsafe to stay there," Shafi said.The extent of the damages in Mongri could be gauged from the fact that the Member Legislative Council (MLC) and senior Congress leader Jugal Kishore Sharma has shot off a letter to the District administration to depute a team of officers to access the losses to the property of the general public.While speaking to Early Times, MLC Jugal Kishore Sharma said that the heavy rainfall has brought miseries for the people of Bhamag particularly in Panjar and Basnote Panchayats of Block Mongri."Panjar and Basnote Panchayats of Block Mongri have suffered huge losses as many houses have fallen and the landslides have endangered the lives of the people," Jugal Kishore said. "I have written a letter to District Development Commissioner, Udhampur wherein I have urged to the administration to depute a team of officers to launch the remedial measures on war footing so that the people are able to get timely help and relief," he added. |
