Supporting seditionists in Kashmir | Pakistan crossing the line, testing India's patience | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 20: What happened in Kashmir on April 15 and 16 were an internal matter of India. On April 15, seditionists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Masarat Alam and their supporters held an anti-India rally in Srinagar and raised pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans, unfurled many Pakistan flags and also made inflammatory speeches to provoke hatred against India. The next day, Geelani, Alam and Asiya Andrabi gave anti-India interviews and made anti-India statements. There was pressure that the governments in the state and at the centre should act against seditionists and book and arrest them under relevant sections. The state government put Geelani and Alam and others under house rest on April 16 and on April 17, the police also sent Alam to the police lock after filing various charges against him. Late in the evening the same day, the police also filed sedition charge against him as well as invoked that section of Criminal Procedure Code under which the arrested person(s) are also tried for waging war on India. The people in the state and rest of the country heaved a sigh of relief after an action was taken against the Pakistani agents. However, the action of the authorities in the state was disliked by Pakistan. Interfering in the internal matters of India, Pakistan said thatpeople waving its national flag on the streets of Srinagar is the "manifestation of deep and lasting emotional bonds" between the Kashmiris and the Pakistanis. Reacting to pro-Pakistan slogans and flags being waved at a rally addressed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani against whom an FIR was registered for "unlawful" activity, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said it was a regrettable move. "What we witnessed yesterday on the streets of Srinagar is the manifestation of the deep and lasting emotional bonds between the people of Kashmir and the people of Pakistan," she said, and shamelessly accused India of choosing to "use excessive force against peaceful demonstratorsexercising their right to peaceful assembly". Not only this. She also said thatPakistan was concerned at the "constant violations" of Kashmiris' fundamental rights and remained "steadfast" in principled stand of extending full moral, political and diplomatic support to them. What she said was a clear and naked interference by Pakistan in the internal affairs of India. Ever since then, the outraged nation has been condemning Pakistan and asserting that that it would meet the same fate as it witnessed in 1971 in case it continued to poke its nose in the internal affairs of India. In 1971, the India army had dismembered Pakistan and the result was the formation of Bangladesh as a sovereign and independent nation. Pakistan must stop testing the nation's patience failing which it would face serious consequences. It should also remember that Kashmir doesn't constitute the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The people of Jammu and Ladakh are, it is too well-known, are intensely pro-India and against such demands as autonomy or merger with Pakistan. But more than that, it should remember that we have a stable government in place at the centre which is there to discharge its obligations. The sooner Islamabad realizes it the better it will be for Pakistan. |
