Expansion of SKUAST (K) campus: Revenue deptt yet to complete acquisition process | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 20: As Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences (SKUAST-Kashmir) is planning for expansion of its Shalimar campus in Srinagar, the revenue authorities are yet to complete the formalities of acquisition of land. As per details available with Early Times the land acquisition process began three years ago and till date revenue department has not completed the formalities of rate fixation for the land which is to be acquired by the SKUAST (K). The main reason for this delay, according to sources, is payment of compensation to the affected villagers of Shalimar area who demand fair compensation. The revenue authorities, on the other hand, have fixed lower rates which are unacceptable to the land owners. Ali Mohammad, one of the affected land owners, told Early Times that under new Central Land Acquisition Act, property and land which is acquired in urban areas would be paid compensation double the market value, while in rural areas where the property rates are comparatively less the compensation would be paid four times more than the market rate. "As the said law is not applicable to J&K, the people are at the mercy of indifferent officials. Government is paying us Rs 20 to Rs 30 lakh per kanal while the market value in our area is Rs 1 crore. Had the new Land Acquisition Act been in vogue in J&K, we would have been paid Rs 2 crore per kanal, but the government is telling us to take Rs 30 lakh per kanal, which is sheer injustice with us," Mohammad said. The people whose land is going to be acquired by SKUAST (K) have now appealed Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Revenue Minister and Agriculture Minister to come to their rescue as the authorities "are trying to acquire our land for peanuts." |
