Akhter's appeal for Geelani's passport draws flak | | | Early Times report Srinagar: Education Minister, Nayeem Akhter's appeal for issue of passport to Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani has evoked severe criticism from various quarters. It is widely reported that Geelani is booked under various sections of RPC and other penal laws of the land. He is also accused of sedition. The issue of passport, according to them, is simply impossible given the stand of the government and the intelligence sleuths on the issue. There have been instances when students have been denied travel documents for their remote connection with militants. Even intended Hajj pilgrims have not been spared. Abdul Majid Wani, the father of slain JKLF commander Ishfaq Majid Wani has been denied passport for his son's involvement in militancy. The irony is that the state government has denied passport to outstanding sportsmen selected by government agencies for participating in international competitions. Issue of passport on humanitarian grounds to Geelani cannot be justified by any means. More deserving cases have been ignored in national interest. Interestingly, the education minister nor anybody else in the administration has intervened in such cases. |
