Separatists trying to provoke forces by hoisting Pak flags

Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Government not allowing chairman of the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to address a rally at Eidgah in Srinagar's old city on the 25th death anniversary of his father late Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq, who was shot dead by gunmen at his Nageen residence in city outskirts in 1990, has sent a strong message to the separatists that anti-India activities won't be tolerated. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who was not allowed by the Police to venture out of his Nageen residence either on May 21 (Thursday) or on May 22 (Friday), according to the sources, had directed his men to ensure that they should stage protests and cause disruption against him being placed under house arrest and government not allowing his Eidgah rally.Despite security agencies imposing restrictions in the areas falling under the six police stations of the old city, a group of Awami Action Committee (AAC) activists, under the very nose of the security agencies, appeared at Lal Bazar on city outskirts on Thursday (May 21) and staged an anti-India protest.Soon after the Friday congregation prayers ended at Jamia Masjid in old city on May 22, a group of youth hoisted Pakistan flags, and raised pro-Pakistan slogans. Later they clashed with police and pelted stones on the vehicles which were passing through the Nowhata area. "We are protesting against the house detention of Mirwaiz and he being prevented from addressing a rally at Eidgah," youth said.Amidst green and Pakistan flags a few youth waved the flag of the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and charged towards policemen with stones. Following which police used pellet guns and pepper gas to disperse the agitated mob.A police official while talking to Early Times said, "Decision about not to allow Mirwaiz from addressing a rally at Eidgah was taken after lot of deliberations. We had clear cut inputs that his supporters would hoist Pakistan flags and it would create a law and order problem."He said that Ministry of Home Affairs had taken a serious note about Pakistan flags being waved during the rallies of the Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani at Srinagar and Tral in south Kashmir. "Security agencies have been told in clear cut terms not to allow any such activities in future and tighten their noose around the separatists and their supporters," he added. The official described the protests and clashes in old city on Friday as a "desperate attempt" by the supporters of Mirwaiz to make their presence felt and an attempt to gain the lost ground. "There are clear cut instructions to contain the activities of separatists and to go after the stone pelters and trouble mongers. Police have been asked to act tough against any such person who breaks the law and tries to vitiate peace," the official added. Pertinently, Kashmir bandh called by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday earlier this week evoked a poor response in the Valley as the areas where no restrictions were placed remained normal as shops and establishments remained open and traffic plied normally. A top official said, "People are fed up of shutdown calls and stone pelting and are least interested in the sermons about separatism being delivered by these separatists. They (separatists) have changed their strategy and are raising Pakistan flags to provoke the force personnel so that some untoward incident takes place and they encash it," the official added.
