CID prepares list of assets, including benami property | Fate of corrupt babus hangs in balance | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 24: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is all set to take stern action against the officials who have amassed huge wealth and whose assets are disproportionate to their known sources of income, sources told Early Times. They said that list of corrupt officials has been prepared by various agencies and Chief Minister would take a final call over their fate. "Soon after Mufti took over the reins of the state he asked the state's top investigating agencies to prepare a dossier against the officials against whom corruption cases were registered and no action was taken due to many of them enjoying political patronage," sources added. They said many officers who were close to the ousted NC-Cong regime and accumulated huge wealth during the past six years figure in the list of "corrupt officers" and are likely to face the axe. "Many officials who were attached during the recent administration reshuffle are under scanner and they may end up in trouble during coming days," the source added. He said that Chief Minister is keen on making the bureaucracy clean and transparent so that the developmental works are expedited and a strong message is sent to the administration that corruption cannot be tolerated. Sources said that investigating agencies after identifying the corrupt officials have investigated details of their properties, bank accounts and other assets. "Comprehensive dossiers on these officials have been prepared by various agencies, including the CID," they added. An officer privy to investigations said that report carries details, including Benami property of the officials. "We are almost done and the list along with other details would be forwarded to the Chief Minister's office within a few days," the officer added. Sources said that speculations about investigating agencies having prepared a list of corrupt officials have created ripples in the bureaucratic circles. "The officials who suspect that their names may figure in the list are making rounds of the offices and residences of the ministers and others who matter," they added. Meanwhile, sources within BJP said that a few BJP ministers are contemplating to approach the Chief Minister and request him not to go ahead with his decision to terminate the services of the corrupt officials. "BJP leaders are of the opinion that attaching these officers is a big punishment and government should refrain from terminating their services as a few officials who figure in the list of corrupt persons are believed to be close to BJP ministers," the source claimed. He said that Chief Minister has kept his cards closed and has refrained from discussing the issue with any of his cabinet colleagues. "Ultimately it is going to be Chief Minister's call and his decision whether he would spare the corrupt officials or would act against them," the source added. A PDP minister wishing not to be named said, "When we selected our personal staff we were very cautious as Chief Minister had directed us to ensure that we select the officials with a clean track record." Pertinently, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed during his earlier stint as the head of the state had terminated a few officials on the charges of corruption. |
