Srinagar, May 24: The J&K government has decided to implement the National Drug Policy in the state after the Centre announces it.
Minister of State (MoS) for Health, Asiya Naqash said the "National Drug Policy will be implemented in letter and spirit in J&K after the union government makes an announcement, as overhauling health sector of the state also includes implementation of the Drug Policy."
"We were considering implementing the Drug Policy that Punjab government has implemented. Besides, we have our own drug policy as well, but finally we feel the union government is sincere to overhaul the entire health system and is likely to announce a drug policy soon. So we have decided to implement the National Drug Policy in our state to put an end to this chaos," she said.
She said to tackle the growing menace of sale and supply of substandard drugs, the union government has taken some concrete steps in the country that include amending the Drug Act.
Pertinently, union Minister for Health, J.P Nadda recently told the Lok Sabha that in order to tackle the growing menace of sale and supply of substandard drugs, government is amending the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 by the Drugs & Cosmetics (Amendment) Act, 2008 to provide for more stringent penalties for manufacture and trade of spurious and adulterated drugs.
He said that for making provisions in the Drugs & Cosmetics (Amendment) Act, 2008 government is setting up special designated courts for speedy disposal of cases to deal with the cases of offences under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
The government is also providing assistance for upgrading of testing facilities and establishing new drug testing laboratories under the Capacity Building project through World Bank, so as to enhance the capacity of the laboratories to test large number of samples, overseeing inspection of drug manufacturing sites to ensure quality of imported bulk drugs.
