Catholic Diocese of Jammu,Srinagar mourns Bishop Peter Celestine's demise | | | JAMMU, May 29: The Catholic Diocese of Jammu-Srinagar offered Requiem Mass at St. Mary's Garrison Church, Gandhi Nagar, here for the repose of the Bishop Peter Celestine who died of a heart attack at Assisi Ashram, Bharananganam, Kerala, where he was residing since December 2014 after his retirement as Bishop of Jammu-Srinagar. All the Catholic Schools of the Diocese conducted prayer service in memory of Bishop Peter who was the President of JammuSrinagar Diocesan Education Society. Bishop Dr. Peter Celestine served the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the last 60 years in various capacities in different parts of the State. He was Principal of many Catholic schools such as Fatima High School Bishnah and St. Peters High School B.C Road. He worked for the unity and peace among people in Jammu and Kashmir, between India and Pakistan. For his efforts to promote peace, he was awarded with the Gandhian Peace Prize. He has established many centers of peace, educational institutions and social development projects to promote peace and unity among people. His initiatives have concrete roots in Kargil, Leh Ladakh, Baramullah Batote Bishop Peter Celestine focused on educational, health, social and developmental activities in the State. He shouldered the responsibilities meticulously as the second Bishop of Jammu-Srinagar for the past 16 years after getting the mantle from the first late Bishop Hippolytus Kunnunkal OFM Cap in the year 1998. To these two great men of God and numerous Mill Hill Missionaries and Capuchin Fathers and Brothers, we, the clergy, the religious and the laity of Jammu-Srinagar diocese are immensely grateful for their selfless, committed and dedicated service. The Church in Jammu and Kashmir today is the fruit of the seeds they sowed. It is flourishing today just because of them. Bishop Peter Celestine had a vision and a heart to serve the people of Jammu and Kashmir with love. To serve with love was his Episcopal motto. True to his motto: "Bishop Peter himself was a man of peace. He was a man of prayer. He was a man of simplicity. He was a man of humility. He was a man of availability. He was an epitome of his Patron Saint Francis of Assisi," said Rev. Fr. Justin Thiraviam, Social Work Director of the Diocese. "Like Saint Francis, he had a heart for the poor and adopted a simple life-style. In brief, Bishop Peter proclaimed through his own life-witness. That was his prayer during his Episcopal ordination," said the new Bishop Rev. Ivan Pereira.
