Shabir Shah arrested after Pakistani flags displayed during a rally at Anantnag | Green flags continue to make headlines | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report Srinagar, May 29: There seems to be no end to the waving of Pakistani flags in the Kashmir valley with the latest incident being reported from South Kashmir's Anantnag district. The flags were displayed during the rally of separatist leader and Chairman Democratic Freedom Party (DFP), Shabbir Ahmad Shah. Immediately after the incident police booked Shah and arrested him near Khanabal while he was on his way back to Srinagar. The DFP Chairman becomes the second separatist leader after Masarat Alam Bhat to be arrested on charges that Pakistani flag was displayed during a public rally. Reports said that some masked youth waved the Pakistani flags during the rally after the Friday prayers and it was caught on mobile phones by the other people taking part in the rally. The rally participants raised slogans against the government. Some of the reports suggested that 'anti-India' slogans were also raised during the rally with the situation also turning volatile in the entire area. Sources said that as soon as the rally started at least five or six masked youth caught the attention of the other people since they were carrying green flags of Pakistan. These people waved the Pakistani flags during the entire duration of the rally and they seemed to be unfazed about the repercussions of the same. Shah addressed the rally which was carried out in some of the important areas of the Anantnag district including Lal Chowk. He averred that India has started a 'war' against Kashmiris. He said that if India's freedom movement against British was justified why the 'resistance' movement of Kashmir is referred to as terrorism by some people. As soon as the rally concluded, police immediately swung into action and took Shah into custody at Khanabal while he was returning to Srinagar. He was booked under the unlawful activities act under case FIR No. 147/2015, under sections 341, 121, 147, 120-B RPC and 13 ULA. It would be in place to mention here that Masarat Alam was arrested after it got established that Pakistani flags were waved during the rally organized by him to welcome chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani on his return from New Delhi. While Masarat himself did not wave the Pakistani flags he was caught on camera raising pro-Pakistan and pro-Hafiz Saeed slogans during the rally. In the meantime, JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik courted arrest along with some of his supporters at Budshah Chowk as part of his organization's programme of 'Jail Bharo Tehreek'. Malik has accused the state government of choking the political space for the separatists and said that separatist leaders are not being allowed to carry out their activities. Meanwhile, CRPF and police used batons and fired few teargas canisters to disperse protesters in the old city here. Scores of youth emerged from the historic Jamia Masjid, Nowhatta after the Friday prayers and staged 'pro-freedom' and 'anti-India' demonstrations. The forces used batons and lobbed tear smoke shells after boys pelted stones on them. There are no reports of injury to any one during the protests. |
