'Security situation too grim to allow AFSPA lifting' | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 29: Mood in the top circles of the PDP was upbeat following revocation of AFSPA in Tripura but the honeymoon was short lived as the top Army authorities besides the Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar, made clear that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was not conducive for withdrawal of the AFSPA. Official sources said that the top Army authorities and senior functionaries of the paramilitary forces have conveyed to the Defence Ministry and the Home Ministry respectively that forces may not be able to operate if the AFSPA was withdrawn. Sources said that the field commanders of the Army and the paramilitary forces have conveyed to the central Government that agencies across the LOC and the IB, including the Pakistan Army officials were planning to push groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir to raise the level of violence. Sources said that more than 400 militants had been brought on the launch pads across the LOC and the IB for sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir. These militants waiting for assistance for sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir were equipped with sophisticated weapons and carried high grade explosives and large quantities of ammunition. In addition to this more than 350 militants were active within Jammu and Kashmir and the recent incidents of attack on police, Army and Cell phone operators besides the exchange of fire between the militants and the Army on the LOC indicated that the security scenario may assume alarming dimensions if sustained counter insurgency operations were not launched and these operations could be fruitful if the AFSPA was not revoked. The level of infiltration of militants from across the border was expected to increase from next month after the border routes had become passable with the melting of snow. Hence the security grid on the border and within the sate needed to be upgraded and this was no time for withdrawal of the AFSPA. Senior functionaries of security agencies say that let the Government wait for another two to three months and if during this period the level of violence touched zero level the Government could revoke AFSPA in a phased manner. |
