Srinagar, May 29: Much to the surprise of many people, MLA Langate, Engineer Rashid today joined separatists to demand release of noted separatist leader Dr Qasim Faktoo.
Rashid appeared at Press Enclave in Srinagar and signed the life-sized poster erected by separatists two days ago demanding release of Faktoo and other political prisoners of Kashmir. While justifying his participation in the signature campaign, Rashid told Early Times that he does not see anything wrong in it.
"One who speaks the truth is real mainstream politician. I have always said that Kashmir is a dispute and I stand by my comment. There is no harm in signing a poster despite being a mainstream politician which actually asks for release of a person who is in jail for his no fault," Rashid said.
"If Rajiv Gandhi's killers can be released why cannot Dr Qasim and others who are in jail be freed," he added.
Separatist group Muslim Deeni-Mahaz of which Faktoo is chairman launched the signature campaign two days ago to demand release of Faktoo. Faktoo is in jail since 1993 after he was booked under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (TADA) act.
A TADA court had acquitted Faktoo on July 14, 2001, but then government challenged the acquittal in the Supreme Court which sentenced Faktoo for life imprisonment.
Faktoo, according to legal experts can only be released after the interference of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
The PDP-BJP government had to face massive outrage after noted separatist leader Masarat Alam was released in March this year. The outrage forced the government to re-arrest Alam.
