Modi wins Dhaka, yet to woo Pak and China
6/8/2015 11:19:28 PM
Possibilities for cordial ties getting promoted between India and Bangladesh have brightened following several agreements signed between the two sides during the latest visit of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to Dhaka. In fact Modi visit has helped India and Bangladesh In opening a new chapter in their ties as they settled the 41-year-old boundary dispute and promised to do more in other areas. What seems to have motivated Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina to reciprocate Modi's desire for promoting friendly ties between the two neighbouring countries is the promise of liberal financial assistance to Bangladesh Modi's announcement of a fresh line of credit of $2 billion to the neighbouring country has sounded music to the ears of majority of people and political leaders in Bangladesh. With West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee standing by his side, Modi, on his maiden visit to Dhaka, also expressed confidence to have a "fair solution" to the Teesta and Feni river water sharing issues with Bangladesh "with the support of state governments in India". After extensive talks between Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the two sides signed 22 agreements, including cooperation in maritime safety and efforts against human trafficking. Hasina, whose country is seen as a hiding ground for insurgents of northeast India, also promised "zero tolerance" stance against insurgents.
In a major effort to enhance connectivity and people-to-people contact, two bus services -Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala and Dhaka-Shillong-Guwahati -were flagged off jointly by Modi, Hasina and Mamata. Hasina said the two countries agreed to set up two special economic zones to bridge the growing trade deficit. Modi promised to do "everything" to address it. He announced a fresh $2 billion line of credit for Bangladesh and promised quick implementation of the earlier line of credit of $800 million and full disbursement of $200 million. The highlight of the Modi's first day here was the exchange of documents related to the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA), which paves the way for exchange of territories to settle the 41-year-old border dispute which has been an irritant.
Under the Agreement, 111 border enclaves will be transferred to Bangladesh in exchange for 51 that will become part of India.
Well promoting cordial ties with Bangladesh is not needed simply to promote trade and people to people contact. But it is needed to encourage the Government in Dhaka to small the militant network, whether that be insurgents from north east area of India or from Pakistan. Modi had visualized the need for securing cooperation from Dhaka in dealing with insurgents, who after carrying out terrorist strikes in the north east areas, managed to cross over to Bangladesh which had made it difficult for the Indian security forces to eliminate or arrest those insurgents. It is hoped the Bangladesh Government will cooperate with New Delhi in addressing the problem of insurgency. Better ties with Dhaka could prevent Islamabad from creating security related problems for India by sending militants to Bangladesh for infiltrating into the Indian Territory. Credit needs to be given to Modi that during one year in office he has smoothened ties with immediate neighbouring countries and the developed nations. The only unfinished task for Modi is to build bridges with Pakistan and China, known to be very difficult neighbours of India Well both Dhaka and New Delhi have to initiate measures for checking infiltration of insurgents and militants through the bus servikces which were made functional from Saturday.
