I begged for 6 years with New Delhi for getting funds: Omar | NC starts finding faults with PDP-BJP govt | | Jehangir Rashid Early Tmes Report SRINAGAR, June 8: National Conference Working President and former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today candidly admitted that he had to beg before then United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre for seeking funds for the state for carrying out various activities. "I begged for six years before the central government while as I was the chief minister of the state. I begged with folded hands before then Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Congress President, Sonia Gandhi and other important leaders so as to get funds from New Delhi. The Jammu & Kashmir state cannot run without support from the central government," said Omar while addressing a press conference here. The press conference was held in connection with 100 days of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state. Responding to a question, the National Conference working president said that chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed should not waste time and go to New Delhi at the earliest so that funds are released to the state for carrying out development and other activities. He asked the chief minister to stop issuing contradictory statements and instead focus on governance in the state. "Finance Minister, Haseeb Drabu should swallow his ego and visit New Delhi along with the chief minister. I am willing to join them because I don't want the people to suffer anymore in the state. We don't have the resources to manage things of our own and as such the central assistance is essential for us," said Omar. Rubbishing the 'intellectual' stature of Drabu, the former chief minister said that the finance minister could not come out with a figure while disputing the projected figure of Rs. 44,000 crores as the losses suffered during the September 2014 flood. He said that Drabu instead of picking holes in the projected losses should give figures about the exact losses suffered during the last year's flood. "The flood relief process has been politicized and I wonder where the money has gone. The BJP National President had on record said that money would be given to flood affected people once their government comes to power in the state. Nothing of that sort has happened and the affected people are crying for money," said Omar. The National Conference working president said that Mufti has failed to live up to his reputation which he had earned during his first stint as chief minister in 2002. He said that politically he is happy that Mufti has lost his credibility among the masses of the state. He said the central government has failed the flood affected people of the state. "From day one the government has been hogged by controversies. In other words we should refer to the government as a government of U-turns. The PDP and BJP have been contradictory statements on host of issues and as such the people are suffering. The picture is not clear as what would happen to the state if the present dispensation carries on for some more time," said Omar. The National Conference working president said that Mufti triggered a controversy when he gave credit to Pakistan and separatists for successful holding of the assembly elections in the state. He said that chief minister changed his statement in the assembly over the subject wherein he gave credit to security forces, people and Election Commission of India for the successful holding of assembly elections. "The chief minister says that AIIMS would come up in Kashmir while as the Minister in Prime Minister's Office says that it would first come up in Jammu and then only some decision would be taken about its establishment in Kashmir. The BJP and PDP continue to have diverse opinions about the Article 370 in the state," said Omar. The former chief minister made an appeal to the Government of India to immediately announce some sort of package for the state so that Jammu & Kashmir comes out of the financial mess. He said the Rs. 44,000 crore package as demanded by previous NC-Congress coalition government should be approved by New Delhi without any further delay. Omar said that his party would not hesitate in moving to High Court or even Supreme Court while lodging complaint over the new recruitment policy in the state. He said that Defence Ministry and Army needs to be taken on board before any decision is taken with regard to the revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state. |
