Natrang felicitates Foreign Scholar Devika Ranjan | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 18 : Foreign Scholar who came all way from Washington DC to Jammu was given a warm send-off here today at Natrang Studio Theatre Jammu in an exclusive felicitation function. According to press release, DevikaRanjan under a grant award programme of the Georgetown University USA worked here for fifteen days and studied the work of Natrang. While trying to deeply understand the working methodology of Natrang, Devika also conducted workshops with children and young actors of Natrang DevikaRanjan-a US citizen with Indian origin currently lives in Boston. As a visiting scholar from the United States, she had a close look study of Natrang's use of theatre in community engagement. She Studies at the Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, Washington DC where she focuses on "Human Rights, Culture, and Communication." Devika is the recipient of the Lisa J. Raines Fellowship which sponsors her independent research; she has also been awarded the "Improving the Human Condition" grant from the School of Foreign Service. For her work in pop-up art to enliven and inspire the Georgetown community, Devika received the highest distinction in the Doyle "It is Not Enough to Refrain from Injustice" Symposium. Devika has a strong theatrical background in acting at both a community and university level. She has directed two full-length plays, devised a work based on ethnographic poetry, and written a one-act play. Aside from theatre, Devika serves as Class Representative to the School of Foreign Service, Bollywood-hip hop fusion choreographer, and Resident Assistant in a first-year dorm. Interested in art in post-conflict zones, Devika came to study Natrang because of its major focus on regional peace and heritage preservation. Her thrust was to explore the intersection of art and identity. During her fifteen day stay in Jammu, Devika witnessed the extraordinary globally acclaimed Dogri play "BawaJitto" which was staged at AgharJittoMela. She also had the occasion to see the production process of Natrang's Sunday Theatre which is the only regular weekly theatre activity of this part of the country continued non-stop since last 12 years. She closely observed the production and staging process of two plays of Sunday Theatre and also led a workshop with the Natrang actors based on improvisation and movement exercises in addition to conducting exclusive classes of Children Summer Camp-2015. Balwant Thakur's innovative work, his methodology of creating a theatre language of images and his art of assimilation with regional performing art traditions was her major attraction. |
