Will 'humiliating' flood package sink coalition boat in J&K? | | | Early Times Report srinagar, June 18: After the Modi government announced a "humiliating" flood relief package for the state, it appears that the coalition government is on the brink of a breakdown as even senior leaders in the PDP are asking the party to reconsider their relation with the BJP. PDP's MP from Srinagar Tariq Kara has raised the pitch by asking the party to re-think over its decision of remaining in the alliance with the BJP. Sources said that Karra is not alone as some more leaders are speaking out against staying in the coalition. "Even Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu is in a state of shock after the relief package was announced," said the sources. They said Drabu along with some senior cabinet ministers held a detailed meeting with the Union Finance Ministry last month after which a relief package of Rs 15000 crore was agreed upon by the Centre. "As the state government was waiting for the already finalised package, it took everyone by surprise when Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minster Arun Jaitley announced Rs 1600 crore," said the sources. "The fact of the matter is that we were waiting for Rs 15000 crores. Contrary to this, we were given merely Rs 1600. It is indeed a cruel joke. What went wrong, and where, we really do not know," a top PDP leader said. She maintained that the reason why PDP is silent even when everyone is pointing fingers at it is because the party itself is very confused and in a fix over the Centre's announcement. "The state BJP ministers are confused too as they were also not privy to the announcement made by Jaitley on Wednesday," said the sources. A PDP leader said he believed the "humiliating" package was announced to send a clear message to the Muftis and their ministers: "You can quit from the alliance." "It is tantamount to pushing a person towards the wall and expecting him not to react. We have everything at stake now. If the final package is not announced within 10 days, then the party would have no option left but to bid adieu to this coalition," said the PDP leader. Meanwhile, it has been learned that Karra didn't issue the statement on his own but was asked by the party leadership. The statement was aimed to remind the Centre about the promises it had made to the PDP ahead of government formation in J&K, said the sources, adding that it would perhaps be also an indication to the BJP high command that if things go the way they are going, then PDP would no longer feel reluctant in ending this 'marriage of inconvenience '. |
