PDP mantris give International Yoga Day a miss | Modi proposes, alliance partner in J&K 'opposes' | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have led from the front at Rajpath in the national capital to celebrate the International Yoga Day, but here in J&K BJP's alliance partner PDP could not motivate themselves to bend their knees and perform Yoga along side their BJP counterparts. Since Sunday morning several senior BJP ministers along with party MP's attended series of functions organised to mark the day but no one from the PDP turned up to join the celebrations. A large number of schoolchildren especially girls caught the imagination of the nation as their pix performing yoga went viral on social networking sites. The event organised in the sports stadium was attended by several senior civil and police officers but PDP ministers chose to stay away. Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh along with cabinet colleague Chowdhary Lal Singh and MP Dr Jitendra Singh attended the function at Gulshan Ground while several party MLAs led from the front and attended yoga camps in their respective assembly constituencies. The celebrations were a major hit among the jawans of the Indian army and paramilitary and state police. The army authorities had made elaborate arrangements across field formations including worlds highest battle filed in Siachen and remote destinations where jawans braving chilly weather conditions came out and displayed great enthusiasm to perform Yog Asanas. Reports from Srinagar said thousands of youngsters, including hijab-wearing girls, participated in army-organised events marking the International Day of Yoga. Over 4,700 members of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) performed 'asanas' (postures) at eight venues in Srinagar, Baramulla, Uri, Bandipura Tangdhar, Anantnag, Kargil and Leh in the Kashmir region. The biggest Yoga Day event was held in Srinagar's Bakshi Stadium, where over 1,200 NCC cadets were present. The same number participated in an event held at Leh in the high-altitude Ladakh region. "These NCC cadets had undergone structured training by trained yoga instructors," said a Srinagar-based army spokesman. The training of the NCC cadets began in mid-April. "The standard of performing yoga was evident with the synchronised and well-timed movements as well as the confidence and ease with which these cadets performed in unison today," said the spokesman. "The event was a phenomenal success and the credit goes to the cadets for their willing participation," said Brig S S Ratnaparkhi, Group Commander of the NCC Group Headquarters in Srinagar. The Yoga Day is a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who joined tens of thousands in performing asanas at Delhi's Rajpath. Events were also organised across the country. |
