After hoodwinking WP refugees in J&K, BJP targets Hindu refugees from Bangladesh | Elections in Assam | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 21: BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav and some local BJP leaders in the election-bound Assam in the sensitive North-East, the other day made a desperate attempt to win over the persecuted Hindus who migrated from Bangladesh to Assam. Madhav & Co held out a promise that these Hindu refugees from Bangladesh will be granted all citizenship rights and the promise was made to suggest that the BJP was with them and that their vote for the BJP would mean a vote for their empowerment. A report from Guwahati in this regard said: The party (BJP) discussed the issue of granting citizenship of Hindus who migrated to the state (Assam) following persecution in Bangladesh and also granting of scheduled tribe status to the six ethnic communities. He (BJP leader) added that party discussed the issue of granting citizenship of Hindus who migrated to the state following persecution in Bangladesh and also granting of scheduled tribe status to the six ethnic communities. We reiterated our commitment to giving citizenship to Hindus and BJP will fulfill its commitment. However, it may take some time. The issue of giving scheduled tribe status to the six ethnic communities is being actively pursued". The report further said: "Senior BJP leaders, including general secretary Ram Madhav, chalked out party's plans and picked up issues to attack the Congress during the state executive meeting in Guwahati…Launching scathing attack on Congress, Madhav said both chief minister Tarun Gogoi and his government must go. This is government of 'lies' and loot". The BJP has been planning to go alone to the polls and will contest all the 126 assembly constituencies. The BJP had seven out of 14 parliamentary seats in Assam and it happened for the first time. It is difficult to say if the Hindu refugees in Assam would vote en-block for the BJP considering the manner the BJP-led NDA Government has been functioning since May 26, 2014, but the BJP leadership desperate to form government in Assam. It can go to any extent to mislead and hoodwink the Hindu refugees from Bangladesh and play with their sensitivities as it did in Jammu & Kashmir during the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Only time will tell if it succeeds in its game plan. It is pertinent to mention here that the Jammu & Kashmir BJP under the leadership of Ram Madhav and others of his ilk during the Lok Sabha and Assembly had also promised citizenship rights to the refugees from West Pakistan, assured the ST communities that they would be brought at par with their counterparts in rest of the country, promised 33 per cent reservation for women in the state legislature and reservation of five seats for PoJK refugees and three seats for internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus in the Assembly. The BJP, if voted to power in Jammu & Kashmir, will "grant citizenship rights, including right to vote in Assembly and local bodies, right to immovable property, right to higher education, right to state government jobs to the refuges from West Pakistan"; "ensure that the ST communities, including Gujjars, Bakerwals, Sippis and Gaddis are brought at par with their counterparts in the rest of the country"; "give 33 per cent reservation in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council"; and "reserve five seats for PoJK refugees out of 24 left vacant in the Assembly for PoJK and three for displaced Kashmiris (displaced Kashmiri Hindus) out of 46 seats earmarked for Kashmir Valley". The BJP made these commitments in its "Vision Document" that was released in November 2014. Did the BJP honour any of its solemn promises? No, it didn't. Just look at the agenda of alliance that was made public on March 1, 2014, the day the PDP-BJP coalition assumed office in Jammu & Kashmir and see for yourself what the BJP did to these segments of society who had voted en-block for it both in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. The agenda of alliance didn't contain any reference whatsoever to any of its promises made to women, STs, PoJK refugees and Hindu refugees from Kashmir. It did talk about refugees for West Pakistan but it only said that it was committed to their "sustenance and livelihood". The fact of the matter is that the BJP hoodwinked all these hapless sections of society, garner votes, became part of the government and even before forming it the BJP abandoned them to accommodate the opposition in Kashmir to these sections of suffering society in Jammu region. This is the party with a difference; it fools the people, induce them to vote for it and it takes no time in "cheating them" and subverting the mandate. |
