Proposed merger of Gilgit-Baltistan evokes severe reaction | Modi accepts Nawaz’s invite | | Javaid Naikoo
Srinagar, July 10: when alongside the "Shanghai summit in Russia" Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan had a chance to meet, Islamabad is planning to merge Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) with Pakistan, a move resisted by PoK's Prime Minister and moderate separatist leaders of Kashmir. According to media reports PoK's "Prime Minister" Abdul Majeed has warned Nawaz Sharief-government against any attempt to merge Gilgit- Baltistan regions which are parts of Jammu and Kahsmir state with Pakistan. PoK Prime Minister in a press conference in Muzaffarabad has said that "Gilgit-Baltistan is part and parcel of the state of Jammu and Kashmir." He has said that any attempt to merge these regions with Pakistan will prove fatal in the light of United Nations (UN) 'resolutions' advocating right to self determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. "I call upon the prime minister of Pakistan (Nawaz Sharief) to avoid (taking) any decision which he is not supposed to take unless the people of Jammu and Kashmir, consent to it." PoK Minister has said PoK President Mohammad Yaqoob Khan has also warned against any such step and has said that "it would be more damaging than the dismemberment of the country in 1971 and while recalling that Gilgit-Baltistan had been given administrative control of Pakistan on a temporary basis and added that "on behalf of over 17.5 million Kashmiries, I warn you (Islamabad) to change your thoughts else, there will be severe reaction." Back in Kashmir here, some separatists of moderate ideology usually known for "not wishing merger of Kashmir with Pakistan" have also expressed their concern over alleged move of Pakistan to merge parts of Jammu and Kashmir presently under occupation of Pakistan like 'Gilgit and Baltistan with Pakistan without the consent of people of Jammu and Kashmir. Separatists leaders while reacting to the news said that "Government of Pakistan is preparing for granting provisional status to Gilgit and Baltistan, and Pakistan occupied Kashmir, according to reports one separatist leader and Chief of 'Islamic Students League (ISL),Shakeel Ahmed Bakshi on Thursday said that "if these reports have even an iota of truth in them then it is highly unfortunate for our sacred freedom movement that the hands which were supposed to help and support this movement are hell bent to raze to ground the very bases of freedom movement". Some other Separatist leaders also while condemning the move have termed the move unfortunate. Pertinently on the sidelines of Shangai summit, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also accepted the invitation of Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharief to visit Pakistan next year. |
