Dulat's disclosure: Hawala bonds separatists, mainstream leaders in JK? | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 10: Is Hawala FUNDING a bond between some separatist and mainstream leaders in J&K? This question has been doing rounds in public circles, with the demand for reinvestigation of such cases growing louder in the wake of recent startling disclosures. While rumor mills had been rife for years that some mainstream and separatist leaders have common interest in Hawala FUNDING, recent revelations of former RAW chief A.S. Dulat in his memoir Kashmir: The Vajpayee Years seems to have vindicated these assumptions. The book reveals that many mainstream leaders were closely connected with separatists and even militants for a symbiotic relation where they all get benefitted through monitory gains. On the other hand, Hawala MONEY is said to be keeping militancy alive in Kashmir. This assessment has been made by Dulat as he sums up the situation saying, "There are dark clouds on the horizon and some things seem to be not right." The issue of Hawala had died down for quite some time, but earlier this year, the Centre revealed that Hawala continued to fuel unrest in J&K. On February 24, Minister of State for Home, Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary, said the militant groups are receiving the funds from various sources through different Hawala channels "which are routed through Gulf and other countries by their mentors for spreading terrorist activities in the state." "As per the report of the Jammu and Kashmir government, six cases have been registered of which four have been challaned for judicial determination," the minister had said. Earlier this month, the BJP asked the state government to ascertain the militant links of some mainstream politicians and reinvestigate the Hawala cases registered against the separatists. On July 4, in a statement BJP spokesman Khalid Jehangir said, "Recent revelations of Dulat cannot be brushed aside." Jehangir said Chief Minister should ask the investigating agencies to peep into the past of the politicians and ascertain whether they still have militant links or not. "There are reports that separatists have been seeking favours from the mainstream politicians and they have been obliged on many occasions. BJP believes that this practice should be done away with and people at the helm should concentrate on addressing the issues concerning the masses," he added. Jehangir said the Chief Minister should reinvestigate the Hawala cases registered against the separatists in Jammu and Kashmir. "Many cases about separatist receiving money through Hawala channels were registered in different police stations but investigations were left half way. Chief Minister should get these cases reinvestigated to ascertain how much money was pumped into Jammu and Kashmir to keep the pot boiling." But till now there has been no breakthrough. Sources said the reinvestigation of such cases needs a nod from the Centre. "State cannot reinvestigate the Hawala cases without formal approval from New Delhi," said a senior official, asking not to be named. |
