Ex-militants picking up arms again, say officials | | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report Srinagar, July 22: Many former militants are returning to militancy in Kashmir Valley, according to security officials. "Former militants are being contacted by the active groups in a bid to woo them back. There are even inputs that letters are dropped at the homes of former militants asking them to resume the militant activities which they had abandoned," official sources told Early Times. They said such a situation is giving sleepless nights to the security grid in the Valley. "Measures need to be taken to arrest the trend. Constant vigil at the ground situation is the need of the hour, and if non-serious approach is adopted it would have dangerous repercussions," the sources said. They said that if the recycling of former militants was allowed sans combat measures, it could throw the situation back to the '90s when Kashmir was on the crossroads. Meanwhile, some of the former militants in Sopore have started migrating from their native areas. "These former militants have been directly contacted by the militants. They have been told to rejoin the rebel groups, which they have left years ago. Police directly cannot stop such an activity, as it would compromise the security of these people along with their families. However, a vigil is being maintained so that the situation would not slip out of our hands," an official said. He said the government has asked the police to keep an account of released militants particularly those who have been released in the past one year. Police has been also asked to monitor their activities. "There is a complete record of the former militants with the police. Their activities are constantly monitored. Therefore, if any recycling takes place, it shall be foiled sans any delay," he said. |
