CM in town, militants strike in Anantnag, kill civilian in grenade attack | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report Anantnag, July 25: One civilian was killed Saturday and five persons, including a CRPF man, sustained injures in a grenade blast in Anantnag district of south Kashmir. Militants tossed grenade at busy Achabal bus stand at a time when Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was chairing a meeting of officials in the town at South Campus of Kashmir University and Army's Victor Force commander was attending a 'Sadhbhavana' programme at High Ground. Officials said six persons, including a CRPF trooper, sustained injuries in the attack. Some of the injured were identified Muhammad Jabbar, Mukhtar Ahmad Zargar, Sheeraza Akther, Vijay Kumar and Huma Sarwar (CRPF man). The injured were evacuated to nearby district hospital, where one of them succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was identified as Muhammad Jabbar, 50, an ice-cream vendor and resident of Breenty, Dialgam area. "Condition of rest of the wounded is stable," a police official told Early Times. He said that target of the grenade attack was public as no patrol party of security forces was passing the area neither any post of the forces is in the area where grenade exploded. Soon after the attack, army and police cordoned off the area to nab the militants. However, the searches were called off later without any breakthrough. Militants carried out the grenade attack at a time when Chief Minister was himself present in the town. "At 12:10pm Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed arrived at South Campus located adjacent to Army's High Ground. The meeting which was attended by MP Mehbooba Mufti, ministers, legislators and officials ended at around 2:10 pm," an officer said, adding that the meeting continued despite grenade attack. Pertinently, media persons were not allowed to cover the meeting conveyed by Chief Minister. Reports said that earlier GOC Victor Force had flagged off a 'Sadhbhavana' programme at High Ground. DIG South Kashmir Range, Nitish Kumar said that same module was behind the attack which carried out attacks on telecom outlets in Srinagar and Sopore. "We had a general input that militants might strike in Anantnag," he said. "Target of the militants was public, not security forces, because people in Anantnag are progressive and don't support strike calls. So the militants carried out this attack just to create fear among the public," Kumar added. On Friday, militants exploded three grenades, targeting mobile communication facilities, at Karan Nagar and Shaheed Gunj localities of Srinagar. Four persons were injured in the attacks. |
