Bandh against Rajouri incident evokes partial response in Kashmir | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 25: Normal life was affected partially in Srinagar and some other parts of Kashmir valley due to a strike call given by the business chambers against the alleged sacrilegious religious act at Rajouri in Jammu division. In the summer capital of the state the impact of strike was felt more in the downtown areas than in the uptown areas. In the commercially important areas of Lal Chowk, Regal Chowk, Residency Road, Hari Singh High Street, Sarie Bala, Maisuma, Budshah Chowk and Gaw Kadal there was complete strike. Hardly any shop was found open in these areas and the life came to a virtual standstill. In the downtown areas of the Srinagar the impact of strike was also felt with very few shops remaining open during the course of the day. Only the private transport could be seen plying on the roads with the public transport remaining off the roads. In the uptown Srinagar both the private and public transport was seen plying on the roads and people faced lesser problems there. Attendance in the schools, banks, government and private offices and other commercial establishments got affected due to the strike call. In the uptown areas majority of the shops and commercial establishments remained open and it seemed that there is no call for strike in the Kashmir valley. Reports from the other places said that partial strike was observed in the other areas of the Kashmir valley. Strike was observed in some areas of Baramulla, Sopore, Pattan, Bandipora, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian. However, no reports of stone pelting were received from any place of Kashmir. Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCC&I) had asked the people to observe the strike. The strike call was initially supported by Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation and Kashmir Economic Alliance. Later on separatist groups and conglomerate like Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also supported the call. Meanwhile, police said that situation remained peaceful by and large in the Kashmir valley with no untoward incident being reported from anywhere. Due to the four grenade attacks on mobile showrooms and towers in Srinagar on Friday security was beefed up to avert any unfortunate incident. Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were deployed in strength across the Kashmir valley so that there are no more grenade attacks on towers or other utilities in Kashmir. |
