Has Farooq Abdullah forgotten 2013 Kishtwar trouble ? | | | How far the latest statement of Dr Farooq Abdullah,National Conference President, in which he has blamed the PDP-BJP coalition Government for vitiating the atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir is correct ? This question continues to bother the opposition leaders and a section of people. There can be a number of aspects of the allegations levelled by Dr Farooq against the BJP-PDP coalition Government. The first aspect can be frustration on the part of the National Conference leadership over the way it has not been able to retain power as the National Conference has tasted power for more years than any other party has done in Jammu and Kashmir. The second aspect can be the realization on the part of the National Conference leaders that they have been reduced to status of helpless spectators while a section of people suffer. The third aspect can be the growing worry on the part of the National Conference leadership over what it calls inordinate delay in releasing hefty financial package for compensating the losses suffered by people during the September 2014 floods and for rebuilding the infrastructure that had been damaged by the floods.Another aspect, which seems to be more plausible than the other,is the eagerness of the NC leadership to comment on the poor governance of the BJP-PDP coalition Government so that people may start realising their futility of having voted the PDP and the BJP to power Farooq Abdullah has said the State is passing through a "very sensitive" period and blamed the ruling coalition PDP-BJP for vitiating peaceful atmosphere of the state. He said the balance that existed between different communities seems to be nowhere.Slamming PDP-BJP coalition for taking the state on a dangerous path of communal discord, Farooq said, "The present situation in the state was a physical manifestation of the policies and plans of the coalition. "He has alleged that the BJP in connivance with its coalition partner PDP has set out on a path to bring Kashmir and Jammu at loggerheads.Well if one goes deep into the problem of regional discrimination the National Conference has to share the blame with the successive Governments in the centre. It is so because the majority of NC leaders, who have remained in power one time or the other, were actually Kashmir centric and hence they did not allow the region of Jammu equal share in power and financial devolution. The problem of regional discrimination has been the result of defective and lopsided delimitation of Assembly constituencies. You have 46 Assembly segments in the Kashmir valley and 37 in the region of Jammu. This marked gap between the number of constituencies has not allowed power to flow to Jammu. As far as Farooq Abdullah's assertion that the State is faced with the problem of communal tension he may not be correct to the dot.If a breezy tension gripped Rajouri recently it was simply the reaction to incidents of waving of Pakistani and IS flags in the Kashmir valley. Has not communal violence rocked Kishtwar and adjoining areas in August 2013 ? Yes communal violence took place in Kishtwar when the state had a coalition Government headed by the National Conference Working President, Omar Abdullah. How then can Dr Farooq Abdullah hold the BJP-PDP coalition Government responsible for communal tension. If the NC President voices concern over the disturbing trends in the state he should hold Pakistan and not the BJP-PDP coalition Government responsible. Look at the way Pakistani troops have been resorting to repeated ceasefire violations on the LOC and the IB simply for the sake of carving out an ingress passage for militants. These border ceasefire violations have added to scare and uncertainty. Instead of suggesting ways and means to the coalition Government for improving governance and for tackling security situation Dr Farooq has been simply berating the Government where the BJP is sharing power for the first time.Among all the political leaders in the state Farooq Abdullah is the tallest and most experienced figure and hence his job should be to guide the coalition. |
