Edu Minister's move to screen test teachers kicks-up storm | Teachers to boycott classes for 2 days | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 4: Education Minister Naeem Akhtar Andrabi's announcement that the certificates of Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers would be verified and they would have to face a screening test before their regularization has sparked a major controversy in the state. Besides bringing them out on the streets to hold anti-government protests, the move has prompted the teachers to observe lockdown for two days starting Wednesday. The ReT teachers are engaged on a consolidated monthly salary of Rs 3,000 for five years after which they are confirmed and put in the regular pay scale. The government defends its move, saying it's only implementing orders of the High Court which had directed it on May 14 to scrutinize the certificates of teachers who have obtained degrees through distance mode from universities outside the state. The court had also directed the government to conduct screening tests of the ReTs before regularizing them. Chairman J&K ReT Teachers Forum, Farooq Ahmad Tantray argued that the government could verify certificates of teachers as they wish to do and "we won't interfere." "But when they talk of screening test of teachers, we feel it's a humiliation of teaching community. We won't allow any kind of screening test of teachers who were engaged by successive governments through a legal process over the years," he said. To oppose the government move, the teachers have decided to go for 'talaband' strike for two days from Wednesday, said Tantray. On the other hand, defending the government move, senior civil society member Shakeel Qalandar said that teachers must not feel scared of screening tests and verification of their certificates if they are on the path of truth. "ReT scheme is in itself a fraudulent method of engaging teachers. Let there be selection on merit basis. Let the best teachers teach in schools and let government pay them decent salaries and also accommodate them in other departments if they feel scared of screening tests," Qalandar said. An ReT teacher admitted that there are hundreds of teachers "who in my knowledge bought certificates from various universities outside the state without attending a single class." |
