Karan makes right noise, bats for talks with Pak | Opposing war-like rhetoric | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 4: One may or may not endorse senior Congress leader and Member of Rajya Sabha Karan Singh’s suggestion that India, like Pakistan, is also making provocative statements or taking recourse to war-like rhetoric, but one cannot disagree with him when he says India needs to talk to Pakistan as half of the Jammu & Kashmir territory has been under the illegal occupation of Pakistan since 1947-1948. "In my personal opinion, while fully safeguarding national security, I do not see why we should not talk with Pakistan on all outstanding issues including Jammu and Kashmir. They are in adverse possession of half of my father's former State, and I fail to understand why we are always on the defensive in discussing this. But for this to happen the sanctity of the LoC and the International Border needs to be re-established and peace restored," Karan Singh said in a statement issued from New Delhi on Wednesday. Of course, his statement that the Army Chief General Dilbag Singh Suhag should have refrained from talking about "short wars" could be contested considering the gravely provocative statements which had been regularly emanating from other side of the border, including the threat that Pakistan would not mind using its nuclear arsenal against India and that Kashmir was on the top of Pakistani agenda. The complaint in India against the Modi Government is that it is very soft towards Pakistan and it has failed to tackle Islamabad in the manner it should have been tackled long back. Pakistan has been breeching International Border and the Line of Control and bleeding India almost on a daily basis, and, at the same time, is involved in a misinformation campaign against India. It has been approaching the world body and the countries like the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom and European Union to intervene on its behalf so that it could annex Jammu & Kashmir. Sadly, however, the Indian response has been inadequate. Karan Singh should have gone by General Suhag. After all, as Army Chief he was supposed to say what he said. Karan Singh, however, did make a point when he questioned New Delhi for its stand on the State territories which have been under the illegal occupation of Pakistan. Way back in 1994, the then Government of India and the entire political class in the country had resolved to take back from Pakistan all those territories, but neither the Government of that time nor any Government after 1996 did anything to implement the resolve. While the aggressor Pakistan always remained on the offensive, India hardly asked Pakistan to vacate the aggression. Karan Singh's suggestion that India should talk to Pakistan on all issues, including Jammu & Kashmir, should be viewed in this context. It is time for India to make PoJK and Gilgit-Baltistan a big issue at international level. In fact, this is the only option left for India to expose Pakistan, call its bluff and establish the world over that India is the victim of Pakistani evil machinations. |
