Union Home Ministry has faith in BSF prowess | | | When the union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, denied reports suggesting that India plans to deploy men of the ITBP on the International Border in Jammu sector it indicates that the central Government in general and the Union Home Ministry in particular are quite satisfied with the capacity of the BSF for ensuring safety of the border with Pakistan. It also indicates that the Union Home Ministry is aware of the bravery and skill of the BSF jawans for foiling infiltration bids and for meeting any challenge from the Pak Rangers whose men have resorted to repeated ceasefire violations on the IB during the last one year.Yes,there has been demand from the political leaders in Jammu, from people in the region of Jammu and from the state Government for further upgrading the management of the IB and security grid on the border. And those who support the idea of upgrading the security grid on the border do have suggested to the central Government that companies of the ITBP be deployed on the IB alongwith men of the BSF.But the Union Home Minister has ruled out the possibility of deploying ITBP alongwith BSF on the IB in Jammu sector because he is quite satisfied with the capacity of the BSF for meeting any challenge from Pakistan. During his visit to Samba sector on Monday Rajnath Singh has indirectly denied reports about deployment of ITBP on the international border between India and Pakistan in Jammu region in addition to the BSF. The ITBP) deployed on the LAC (line of actual control) between India and China in the Ladakh region. ITBP Himalaya ki goad ki raksha karti hai (ITBP guards the lap of the Himalayas for the country) is the view of Rajnath Singh while inaugurating the headquarters of 47th Battalion of ITBP in Kagwal area of Samba district. He made it clear that since Kathua is the entry point to reach the lap of the Himalayas (Ladakh region) in the state, where the ITBP guards the LAC, it is necessary to station a battalion of this force at the entry point to reach the Himalayas. This way Rajnath Singh's statement has dismissed reports about plans to augment the Border Security Force (BSF) strength by deploying the ITBP on the international border in Jammu region.Well one may not find any major difference in the defence capabilities between the BSF and the ITBP because both are paramilitary forces. In fact the ITBP was conceived on October 24,1962 soon after the Chinese incursion in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. Its men are trained in high altitudinal warfare and its men continue to guard the LAC from Karakoram pass in Ladakh to the far end of Arunachal Pradesh, thereby its men cover over 3488 kms of border with China. The ITBP has been manning border outposts set up at an altitude between 9,000 and 18500 feet. This way the ITBP men may have no added utility if they are deployed on the IB in Jammu sector because the entire 187 km long IB is plain border belt where the temperature is hot.Since the men of the ITBP are trained in fighting mountain warfare and have got acclimatised to bear the minus temperature they are most suited to guard the LAC and not the IB. By deploying men of the ITBP on the IB it would be sheer waste of their talent and split in the responsibility between the BSF and the ITBP.Let the Union Home Ministry continue torepose faith in the BSF and over the years it has been seen that the BSF has not only foiled ingress bids by militants who were being pushed into Jammu sector from across the border but had also retaliated with full force and fury each and every ceasefire violations being committed by the Pakistani Rangers. Yes,those families that were forced to flee to safer places do want the security grid to be upgraded but by deploying ITBP on the IB one cannot check Pak bullets and mortar shells hitting civilian houses because most of the those have been built close to the IB.Let the Union Home Ministry deploy additional companies of BSF on the IB and keep the ITBP companies in reserves for meeting any eventuality on the LAC. |
