Upper Reaches receive Snow in Kashmir, Rain in plains | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 22: Upper reaches in the Kashmir valley received light to moderate snowfall while plains, including summer capital, Srinagar were being lashed by rain since last night resulting in chilly conditions. A MeT department spokesperson said here that there could be isolated rain till September 24, a day before the Eid-ul-Azha, when the weather will turn dry for subsequent three days in the Kashmir valley. He said there could be widespread or isolated rain during the next 48 hours in Jammu region and scattered or isolated rain in Ladakh during the next 24 hours. The upper reaches in the valley, including holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery besides Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso Top, Panjtarni and other heights in Pahalgam received fresh light to moderate snowfall since last night. Meanwhile Higher reaches of Bhaderwah and other parts of the erstwhile district Doda received season's first snowfall while rains lashed the plains dipping the day temperature sharply today, forcing people to wear woolen clothes. After a long dry spell, snowfall started on higher reaches of Bhaderwah and other parts erstwhile district Doda this morning. The snowfall started in the morning at Kailash Kund, Chatter Galla, Padri Dhar, Sunbhain and snow point a weather department official said adding that the minimum temperature appreciated by nearly three degrees from yesterday's minus 2.9 degrees celsius to settle at minus 0.2 degree Celsius because of cloudy sky. Meanwhile, the MeT official said that rains will occur at many places across erstwhile district Doda in the next 24 hours. However, from Wednesday afternoon, the weather conditions will start improving. However, at Pahalgam it was raining since last night, a Hotel owner told over phone. Though there are icy cold winds in the town since this morning, the minimum temperature at the world famous health resort remained above normal. It was 10.9 degree Celsius, three notches above normal despite 19 mm rainfall during the night. Gulmarg, famed ski resort in north Kashmir recorded highest 26.2mm rainfall during the past 24 hours while upper heights received snow resulting in drop in the minimum temperature which settled at 6.6 degree, half a notch below normal. The spokesperson said the maximum temperature at Gulmarg yesterday was 16.2 degree, three notches below normal. After recording two degree below normal maximum temperature, Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on the Srinagar-Jammu highway, witnessed increase in the minimum temperature despite 25.8 mm rainfall. Against yesterday's minimum temperature of 8.8 degree, it was 11 degree which is being considered normal during this time of the season. Kokernag, a tourist spot in south Kashmir and Kupwara in north also recorded one to two degree above normal minimum temperature despite 16.4 mm and 12 mm rainfall respectively. Srinagar, the summer capital, where people are preparing to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha on September 25, received 17.6 mm rainfall during the night resulting in drop in the temperature. Against yesterday's 13.6 degree minimum temperature it was 12.9 degree, which was still a notch above normal. However, the minimum temperature in the city was 25.7 degree, about one and half a notch below normal yesterday. Warm and woolen cloths are finally out as people feel cold due to rain today also. Srinagar received 284 mm rainfall since June Ist which was 118 mm rainfall above normal till yesterday. Though Leh witnessed increase in the minimum temperature, there was drop in border town of Kargil in Ladakh region. Against yesterday's 11.7 degree minimum temperature, it was 12.8 degree while at Kargil it was 4.2 degree against yesterday's 6.6 degree. |
