Indian retaliation forced Pak to seek peace on border | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 22: If intelligence inputs are to be relied on Pakistan has been forced to seek meetings with the BSF, deployed on the IB, and then with the Army, deployed on the Line of Control (LoC), for defusing armed conflict on the border. According to these inputs Pakistani troops and the Rangers had felt encouraged, during the last several years, in resorting to repeated ceasefire violations on the IB and the LoC. And during these ceasefire violations, in which Indian border outposts and civilian houses were hit by bullets and mortar shells, Pakistani forces made repeated attempts at pushing groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir. However, during the last seven months when Pakistani forces resorted to heavy firing on the Indian border outposts and Army positions, the Indian troops and the BSF were clearly told to retaliate with full force and fury. As the BSF and the Indian troops used mortar and long range guns for pounding Pak border outposts Islamabad was forced to opt for ceasefire. And when the DG Rangers, Maj Gen. B Umar Farooq, held a meeting with his Indian counterpart, DK Pathak, who heads the BSF in New Delhi the two sides agreed to keep the guns silent. But despite agreement on fresh ceasefire Pakistani troops indulged in repeated ceasefire violations in Poonch, Rajouri, Kupwara on the LoC. And again the Indian troops were asked to retaliate with force and fury and when the Pakistani troops came under pressure by the Indian retaliation it agreed to have a flag meeting for defusing the conflict. It is the result of this pressure that India and Pakistan have agreed to de-escalate tension on the Line of Control as its armies held a Brigade Commander-level flag meeting y at Chakan da Bagh on the LoC in Poonch district. The last such meeting was held at the same place on January 17, 2014. The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere and issues regarding the ongoing ceasefire violations, targeting of civilians and sniper actions on the Line of Control were addressed. Both the sides have mutually agreed to exercise restraint and take steps to defuse the situation. Both the BSF and the Indian troops have been told to retaliate in case Pakistani forces violated the latest agreement in order to silence the Pak gunners. Another report said that Pakistan wanted to pressurize New Delhi for resumption of bilateral talks but when it found that India had adopted tough stance on the LoC and the IB Pakistan felt there was no other alternative but to defuse the crisis on the border. |
