Farmers of Jammu bracing up for agitation | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 16: With State Government remaining total callous towards them, the farmers of Jammu region are bracing up for a major agitation for redressal of their demands. The farmers whose 60 percent crops were damaged due to last year floods have not been paid any compensation for the same till date while they also lost 80 percent of standing crop and seedlings during the hailstorm on Wednesday. Feeling totally neglected and cheated by Government and political representatives who backtracked from their poll promises after elections has been a cause of concern among the farmers of the region who are now left with no alternative except to launch a decisive battle to get their demands solved. The farmers are often the victims of vagaries of weather and last year minimum crops were damaged in Jammu region due to flash floods and heavy rains, sources, said adding the Government constituted the relief and agriculture teams to asses the losses and recommend compensation but till date the same was not paid. Last year 60 percent crops were damaged in Jammu region due to flash floods and heavy rains and this year again two days back over 70 percent standing crops were damaged due to hailstorm and heavy rains in the region said Ram Kumar a Basmati grower of R S Pura. He said a farmer spends his every thing on the field with the hope that he will get a good yield but for last two years they have been facing the vagaries of weather due to which crops have been damaged. This has made the condition of farmers miserable as they don't have any support from Government. The farmers in the Jammu region are in a great distress and ``we are left with no alternative but to launch a decisive battle said Ram'',. The indifferent attitude of Government has made our position awkward and the farmers will resist it strongly. Farmers said that they lost 80 percent standing crop during Wednesday's hailstorm. The hybrid verities of paddy were ripe and basmati was in tilling stage and it suffered a heavy damage. They said the remaining 20 percent will also be no procured by Food Corporation of India (FCI) as the rice prepared out of it will not be worth marketing and FCI will not procure it, they added. They said that the position of farmers is awkward as they have been put to a heavy loss. Even the vegetable seedlings have also been damaged due to hailstorm. Tejinder Singh president J&K Kissan Council and a promising farmer of the State said that government should pay compensation to farmers at the rate of Rs 40,000-00 per acre of land for the damage suffered by them due to hail storm, besides it should announce weather based crop insurance for farmers, 100 percent Kissan Credit Card crop loans be remitted to farmers and farmers be supplied input for next season free of cost. Making a scathing attack on Government, he said its attitude is not good towards the farmers of Jammu region and fed up with the negative and indifferent attitude of the Government the farmers will be forced to launch rail rook and road rook agitation. |
