BGSBU students celebrate 'Hitler' VC's ouster; faculty refuses to attend farewell party | | | ET Report JAMMU, Oct 16: Terming Friday as "Independence Day" students of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) celebrated ouster of the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof I A Hamal by bursting crackers and beating drums. They described his tenure in the premier institution as scam-ridden, and were happy about "Hitler VC" being sacked. The most embarrassing moments for the outgoing VC, who will most probably be replaced by Prof Javed Musarrat, Dean Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) as the new BGSBU VC in Rajouri district of Jammu region next week, came when the teaching and non-teaching staff refused to attend a "farewell party" hosted by him, official sources claimed. The students and the faculty, who were unhappy with Prof Hamal, alleged that his tenure as V-C was marked by controversies and remained dominated by scandals, including the infamous scholarship scam. They alleged that the quality of education in the university too deteriorated during Prof Hamal's tenure Sources said that hundreds of students gathered in the campus this evening and raised slogans against Prof Hamal while celebrating his ouster. They also burst crackers and danced to the tune of drums. They hoped that with his ouster, the varsity would progress in all the spheres of education and other activities. Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who is the Chancellor of the university, appointed Prof Javed's appointment as BGSBU V-C on Thursday. The appointment was made on the basis of the recommendations of the Search Committee headed by Prof Amitabh Matoo, Advisor to the chief minister. The appointment has been made for a period of five years from the date Musarrat assumes office. The students, who had gone on an indefinite strike against Prof Hamal and in support of their demand to get the alleged scams in the university probed, had called off their stir on August 22 this year when the registrar BGSBU Mohammad Rashid Choudhary and SIT head was removed. They had resumed the strike on August 24, following refusal by the registrar to comply the order. They had also locked the main BGSBU gate, demanding resignation of the registrar and the V-C and re-constitution of SIT to hold a fresh probe into the alleged scholarship scam of over 20 lakh. |
