Director SKIMS trying to befool Govt | CM invited to inaugurate already functioning sarai | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 16: Director SKIMS Srinagar, Dr Showkat Ali Zargar has found a novel method to be in the good books of the ruling PDP-led coalition so that he is allowed to continue as head of the premier hospital, though his tenure has already ended. Dr Zargar has invited Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to inaugurate a sarai at SKIMS on Saturday, October 17, even though the facility has been operational for over a year when the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah threw it open for the public in the aftermath of floods. The SKIMS, as per a handout released last year, had created additional wards and facilities for patients at the sarai. "SKIMS authorities threw open the sarai for emergency and critically sick patients, whose inflow had increased manifold after the floods which devastated most parts of Kashmir," the handout had said. The sarai, as per the handout, served as mini hospital which ran day care cancer ward where 40-50 patients received chemotherapy every day and gynae cases were being looked after. Sources said it was on the instructions of then CM Omar Abdullah that the sarai was thrown open for people during the crisis. Thereafter, when the flood crisis subsided, the sarai was used for boarding and lodging of people from far off areas. In February this year, the sarai was converted into swine flu ward when the deadly epidemic broke out in the Valley. "Two months later when the flu threat subsided, the sarai was again put to use for the purpose it was established," said a group of doctors atSKIMS. "How can you inaugurate a facility which has already been operational for over a year? This is sheer mockery of the system," they added. Sources said some senior doctors had cautioned Dr Zargar not to get the facility inaugurated by Mufti as it would put his government to embarrassment. "But Dr Zargar declined our pleas," the doctors said. Incidentally, even the website of SKIMS carried a handout to highlight the "commendable job under taken by Dr zargar and his team" after the sarai was thrown open for the public during the floods. "However in a bid to hide this from the eyes of Mufti, Dr Zargar has got the contents of the webpage removed," the insiders said. But in doing so, Dr Zargar couldn't get the entire proof removed from the website. The webpage still exists at URLhttp://www.skims.ac.in/images/PRO/PressRelease_Sarai_MiniHospital.pdf. But the contents which highlighted the use of the Sarai for the past over a year have been removed. Sources close to Dr Zargar said he was doing it all to please the government to let him continue as the Director SKIMS. Though his tenure ended in May 2014, Dr Zargar managed to please the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah not to replace him. Now, as per the hospital doctors, he is trying to do the same before Mufti and this was why he invited him to the hospital for inauguration of the sarai. "Mufti is unaware that the sarai has already been operational. Otherwise he would never consent to visit the hospital for his purpose," said a source. With Mufti having consented to be the chief guest for the sarai inauguration, Dr Zargar is busy with the hospital inspection lest Mufti points out the weaknesses, which have grown manifold. "Civil society, ministers, bureaucrats get best service at the hospital and they never raise voice against the malpractices going on in the SKIMS. Whenever a patient related to bureaucrat or a minister comes to the hospital, from the Director to head of departments everybody remains on toes. They never realize what actually happens to a poor patient," said an insider. |
