SRINAGAR, Oct 16: The flood hit people of Kashmir valley got dejected and disappointed as there was no mention of the problems being faced by them during the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed at New Delhi on Thursday.
The flood hit people who are slowly but surely picking up the threads were waiting that there would be some good news for them at the end of meeting between PM and the CM. As this did not happen it was natural that these people got disappointed and dejected as well.
'Over the past few months the office of Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar has been issuing lists of flood hit traders who are entitled for compensation. However, on ground just a handful among these traders has received the compensation amount with the rest waiting for the funds to come so that they can get the compensation amount," said Mohammad Yusuf, a shopkeeper of Lal Chowk area.
Like Yusuf there are many people who were expecting that some breakthrough would be achieved during the Modi-Mufti meet vis-à-vis rehabilitation of flood affected people. However, their hopes got dashed since the PM and CM did not talk about the problems being faced by flood hit people.
"Most of the people whose houses got completely damaged in September 2014 flood have received Rs. 1.75 lakh as compensation from the government so far. In this category there are many cases where people have received meagre Rs. 75,000 as compensation amount. The people whose houses were either severely or partially damaged too have been paid meagre amount," said Arshad Ahmad, a resident of Basant Bagh.
Ever since Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) formed government in the state reports are doing rounds that a comprehensive rehabilitation package would be announced for the flood hit people. Since no such development has taken place and package has not been announced, the people battered by flood are waiting for the day when they would hear some good news.
"The PDP-BJP coalition government is more than seven months old now, but we the flood hit people continue to feel the heat. Repeated announcements about the likely package have virtually added insult to the injury since at the end of the day no money whatsoever has been released for the flood hit people. Both the coalition partners have ditched us and we have been left at the mercy of Almighty," said Aijaz Ahmad, a resident of Rajbagh.
The issue of the rehabilitation of flood affected people got echoed in the recently concluded autumn session of the state legislature. In the assembly Finance Minister, Dr. Haseeb Drabu said that the package proposal of Rs. 44,000 crores submitted by the previous National Conference-Congress coalition government was full of loopholes. He said the state government is seriously pursuing the rehabilitation package with the central government.
It would be in place to mention here that the traders of Lal Chowk area have threatened to carry out protests from October 21 in case their demand of proper rehabilitation of flood hit businessmen is not taken up by that date. It seems that the protests are on since there is no word from the state government about the demand raised by the traders.
