Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Oct 30: At least 12 persons sustained injuries as clashes broke out between groups of agitating youth and security forces personnel in some of the areas of downtown Srinagar. The clashes led to chaos in the areas with people running for their safety.
Traffic movement got suspended in the areas where the stone pelting incidents took place with shopkeepers also suspending their business.
Reports said that as soon as the congregational Friday prayers culminated at the Jamia Masjid here, groups of youth appeared on the main road and started pelting stones on police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. The stone pelting led to chaos in some of the areas and the ding dong battle carried on for hours together.
Groups of agitating youth mostly wearing masks appeared in the Nowhatta Chowk and started the stone pelting. Some of the masked youth were seen carrying flags of Islamic State and they too resorted to stone pelting on police and CRPF personnel. The stone pelting that started from Nowhatta spread to areas like Gojwara, Khawaja Bazar and Rajouri Kadal.
The stone pelting led to disruption in the movement of traffic in the affected areas with vehicles being diverted via alternate routes. The shopkeepers in these areas along with the adjacent ones downed their shutters and suspended their business. The police and CRPF personnel posted in the Nowhatta chowk tried to manage the situation by chasing the stone pelters.
As the stone pelters were not ready to let in, the police and CRPF personnel resorted to intense teargas shelling in the Nowhatta Chowk and the adjacent areas. Dozens of smoke shells were lobbed to bring the situation under control and it was only after many hours that the situation was normal in the affected areas. One dozen persons sustained injuries during the clashes.
It would be in place to mention here that chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had asked the youth not to carry out protests without any prior announcement. However, the stone pelters did not pay any heed to the suggestion of Mirwaiz and they carried out protests in the form of stone pelting at their own will. The agitating youth have been displaying or waving banners and flags of IS, Pakistan and Laskhar-e-Toiba in the protests preceding the stone pelting incidents in downtown Srinagar. Photos of Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Mohammad Sayeed, Hizbul Mujahideen supremo Syed Salahudin and Hizb commander Burhan Wani have also been spotted in downtown Srinagar on Fridays before stone pelting incidents.
