Nothing will change, say commoners | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Nov 2: Commoners in Srinagar are of the opinion that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Kashmir visit won't change anything except turning the winter capital into a garrison for a couple of days. The traders who have been on the forefront of the campaign for relief and rehabilitation of the flood victims have expressed dismay over the proposed visit. The chairman of the Kashmir traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF), Yasin Khan while talking to media accused Modi of nurturing double standards. "He has a different yardstick for Jammu and Kashmir," he said. Khan said whatever amount reached the sufferers came from the insurance companies. "We had pinned hopes on PM Modi but we stand disappointed," he said. The people in Jammu are equally dismayed for genuine reasons. The BJP has done nothing in Jammu ever since the coalition government took over reins of the state early this year. Voices have been heard in the winter capital against the BJP which swept the assembly elections with people's support. Pertinently the delay in releasing the package for flood affected people has won the coalition government severe criticism. The delay has been taken note of by the High Court. Taking cognizance of a PIL, the High Court has directed the union government to file status of the package or ensure personal appearance of the union finance secretary on the next hearing. The visit will put the credibility of the government to a litmus test. If Modi announces the package, it will help PDP regain some of its lost 'good will'. And if the Prime Minister defers the announcement, it can prove to be a major setback for the coalition government. |
