PDP-BJP MLAs following footsteps of their predecessors | Legislators bask in sun, leave people in lurch | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 22: Most elected representatives have left Kashmir and are basking in the sun at warmer places away from chilly conditions which have been prevailing in the Valley for the past many days. "It has been a common practice in Jammu and Kashmir that people who can afford move from Jammu to Srinagar in summers to save themselves from scorching heat and in winters they move from Srinagar to Jammu and other warmer places," said an analyst. He said government closing down winter secretariat has added to the woes of the common masses as they have no one to approach. "Most ration depots in the Valley are empty, electricity is playing hide and seek and there are not enough stocks of LPG cylinders available with the dealers. Along with essential commodities elected MLAs are also missing from the Valley," said Farooq Ahmed Sheikh of Nawab Bazar. He said that one can understand ministers moving to Jammu in winters but why do all MLAs from Srinagar shift to Jammu is an issue which needs to be deliberated upon. "These MLAs call themselves as elected representatives of the people but when people need them most they disappear from the scene," Ahmed added. An MLA wishing not to be named said, "Why are you making an issue about we shifting to Jammu in winters our predecessors have been following this practice for decades together. We are just following their footsteps." "Even if we stay in Kashmir during winter season we won't be able to do anything for the people as the government moves to Jammu for six months. Usually common people also leave Kashmir during winter. Don't make an issue out it," the MLA quipped. As people are struggling to face the winter vagaries in Kashmir, the rulers and elected representatives of people are basking in the hot sun at warmer places. These days one finds it difficult to get accommodation in the winter capital (Jammu) as most of the government accommodation has been occupied by the ministers, MLAs, leaders and activists of different political parties. An analyst said, "Politicians don't learn from their mistakes. Leaders of oldest regional party of Kashmir National Conference had to bite the dust in 2014 Parliamentary and Assembly elections as they ignored people and their problems. They (NC leaders) deserted people when masses needed them the most during floods in 2014. NC leaders leaving people in lurch proved to be the last nail in their coffin." The analyst said PDP and BJP leaders are following the footsteps of their predecessors and are staying away from common masses. "New rulers are no better than older ones. Someone needs to remind them that NC and Congress stalwarts lost their address due to their laidback approach. They need to realize that they cannot bask in the hot sun without providing appropriate facilities to the people to fight the biting cold," he added. |
