Mehbooba set to take over as 'caretaker' CM
PDP-BJP start final negotiations on 'interim plan'

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 31: Given the ailing health of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who is hospitalized at AIIMS, his daughter and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti is likely to replace him as the "caretaker" CM.
Highly placed sources said the leaders of the PDP and the BJP have agreed that the negotiations over "rotational CM" could be held later but the need of the hour was to immediately replace Mufti with Mehbooba as the former needs rest and medical attention while the Government work should not suffer.
The negotiations on the issue of "caretaker CM" have geared up as the doctors treating Mufti at AIIMS are understood to have conveyed to the Government that the CM would need rest for around a month and thus wouldn't be able to attend the Assembly session, which is scheduled to commence from January 18 in Jammu.
"Given the necessity to instantly replace the CM, the best way out to avoid any controversy over rotational CM of three years is that Mehbooba be taken as the caretaker CM," said a party insider.
He said this way options would remain open on future negotiations and if Mufti's condition improves and doctors allow him to work, he would regain the chair.
Insiders said BJP, which looks ahead for rotational CM if Mufti is replaced, has found the idea "negotiable."
While deliberations are being held, sources said a final nod from New Delhi is awaited and if all goes well Mehbooba would be sworn in as the Chief Minister in the coming days.
Presently, since the day Mufti was airlifted to New Delhi, Mehbooba is by his side at the hospital in the national capital. Sources said some of the senior leaders of PDP have left for New Delhi to have a final word with the party president, who till now has shown little interest to take over as the CM.
Though speculations had been rife for the past over a month that Mehbooba would replace her father at the top chair, she had shown little interest. "But given the medical advice of the doctors that Mufti Sayeed needs rest of over a month to recover, we are convincing Mehbooba," the party insiders said.
Mufti was admitted to the intensive care unit of AIIMS on December 24 with complaint of chest infection. The official statements say he has been making steady recovery.
Mehbooba currently heads the PDP whose alliance with the BJP has been ruling the State since March 1 this year. According to the alliance terms decided between the PDP and BJP, Mufti is to remain the CM for the full six-year term.
